We have been to The Reel several times and this attempt did not disappoint! Chef Aiki butchers all of his own fish and meat in house. He is famous for breaking down huge Tunas and using the whole fish. The Ahi Poke could have had the most fresh tuna we have ever tasted. My halibut piccata was outstanding. This is a terrific local hidden gem that is close to home for us. There is live music on weekends and the place is very spacious including an outdoor dining area and separate bar. The only reason it didn't get 5 stars is that the drinks took an unusually long time to get to our table. Chef was there on our way out and we complimented him profusely for the outstanding food.

We had dinner here last Thursday night with 2 friends. Not crowded at all. The Basketball playoffs were on a big TV and several others, so it isn’t fancy. I had the Scallops with a rice dish-very good. Two others had Salmon, which was good, but rather small pieces. The other person had fish and chips which he liked. Good service.

The Reel Fish Shop & Grill is truly an exceptional local restaurant in Sonoma with great atmosphere and a cadre of employees who understand the value of an easy smile and attentive service. Deciding to dine there for the first time, we were curious why the TA reviews we'd read were so unusually polarized--full of praise from one guest to disappointed from the next.

Upon entering the place, we were greeted by friendly staff and served by Tori, a woman who was simply delightful to us from the beginning and throughout our stay. Since this was our first visit, we decided to order standard dishes: fish-and-chips and fish tacos along with cold beers. The restaurant reminded me of neighborhood taverns that used to dot the outskirts of Seattle--rustic, a dance floor and a stage. While we dined, they had a female guitarist/vocalist perform. She was shy but made up for it by offering beautiful music.

In sampling the food, I discovered why the restaurant had received such differing reviews. The fish tacos were the best ever as were the exceptional fries. But the deep fried fish was unnecessarily too greasy, remedied by scrapping off the batter covering and eating the delicious cod inside.

After trying this restaurant, I suggest that the owner carefully consider every bad review on the quality of food and challenge himself to correcting those dishes that receive repeated criticisms. Otherwise, this unique restaurant will fall short of its great promise of being ranked as one of the very best in Sonoma.

We were at the Hawkes Winery just off of Sonoma Square when we overheard a conversation about local fare. The locals know about this but visitors and tourists don't. Now you will!
The Japanese-Italian Chef/Owner (Aiki is his name) has been a culinary consultant and took over this establishment a couple of years ago. (When we love something, we ask to speak with the chef. It was a delight to find out he owns the place, too!)
He prides himself on creating bright flavors. And guess what, they shine through!
My wife and I weren't all that hungry, and then we ended up sharing a bunch of small plates, each of which were amazing.
We started with the Ahi Poke - well seasoned and lightly glazed tuna that is chosen well, so it melts appropriately.
The Sticky Ribs were larger than expected, sticky because of the slightly sweet sauce, and fall-off-the-bone cooked to perfection.
They had two specials we dove into: Shrimp & Chorizo street tacos. What a great mix of flavors with large shrimp and just enough chorizo as to add flavor and not overpower. And, we had the Cod Flautas. These are a great take on fish-sticks, although writing it that way seems to demean them. The cod was light and flavorful, the wrapper was crispy and not-oily. It made for a light addition.
What looked GREAT but we didn't order was the risotto. Scallops with a Filet Mignon over risotto has got to be a winner. We just couldn't do it.
We did each have a whiskey blush drink - refreshing and still potent.
And we ended the meal with a crisp - fresh berries topped with light oatmeal crumble, served in a mini-mason jar. Just right-sized, not too much.
It sounds like a lot of food - and it was. We spent a couple of hours eating dinner because... why not.
This is casual dining. The food is GREAT and we'll definitely be back.
