Owner description: Historic home built by General Vallejo in 1850.

Lovely old Victorian home (Carpenter Gothic) which was Mariano Vallejo's home. The dining room table is set as though the family was planning to dine. The living room has the musical instruments placed as though the family was going to hear some fine music after dinner. One interesting fact is that the exterior came from the East Coast around the Horn. But Vallejo liked the insulating qualities of adobe, so the inner walls are composed of adobe. It is a charming old home with lovely grounds. The Parks ranger came give you more details if you visit there.

The layout, condition and staging of each room was terrific. Two rangers were handling two groups of schoolchildren during our visit and were great teachers. They had each little grade schooler telling his name, where from and then choosing the next one. Everyone was involved.

Being there invokes a feeling of the past, how people lived, cooked, slept and were entertained. Very well preserved and not commercialized at all.

This landmark of a home belonging to General Mariano Vallejo is a gem in the Sonoma valley and full of the interesting conflict on how California very nearly became a Mexican state. The rear little house was charming where his son enjoyed some "teen" time was an incredible forward thinking idea for such a man who is generally known for his politics. Outstanding piece of history!

This little bit of history is often forgotten by tourists and locals alike. It will be a short visit but really gives you a feel of old Sonoma.
