This is a fun, all-weather location where you can spend the day browsing unusual shops, dining from A to Z, and wine tasting in several local tasting rooms, as well as exploring the old Sonoma Mission and soldiers' barracks. There are a number of short treks off the square where you can find more wine tasting rooms, shops and a wonderful old cheese shop, the Vella Cheese Company. If you get food to go, on warm days, take advantage of the lovely tree shaded park, with lots of tables and open space to put down a blanket for a picnic. Great place to spend a day, and plenty to keep everyone happy!
The parking can be a bit of a pain, and the ways in and out of the square can take you in more than one circle (we did it twice), but once you get the hang of the bigger intersections, it is easy enough to locate parking within a reasonable walking distance, and getting back to the main streets are easy enough as well.
If you visit Sonoma, and don't have the time to drive to several wineries, or want a concentrated 'Sonoma' experience, go for this day trip!
