Lots of cool shops and restaurants. Great center of town. Lots of community activities, like music on the square and festivals.

This is just a great place to relax or walk though/around. Great for people watching and relaxing after a long day. Plenty of giant shade trees to enjoy a break from the summer sun.

My husband and I enjoyed spending the day walking around the square going to different wine tastings and eating great food.

This is a fun, all-weather location where you can spend the day browsing unusual shops, dining from A to Z, and wine tasting in several local tasting rooms, as well as exploring the old Sonoma Mission and soldiers' barracks. There are a number of short treks off the square where you can find more wine tasting rooms, shops and a wonderful old cheese shop, the Vella Cheese Company. If you get food to go, on warm days, take advantage of the lovely tree shaded park, with lots of tables and open space to put down a blanket for a picnic. Great place to spend a day, and plenty to keep everyone happy!
The parking can be a bit of a pain, and the ways in and out of the square can take you in more than one circle (we did it twice), but once you get the hang of the bigger intersections, it is easy enough to locate parking within a reasonable walking distance, and getting back to the main streets are easy enough as well.
If you visit Sonoma, and don't have the time to drive to several wineries, or want a concentrated 'Sonoma' experience, go for this day trip!

A good variety of shops (clothing, home decor), art galleries, and restaurants surround the square and make for a fun, entertaining afternoon. Weekends bring events to the square - art shows, festivals, or artisans selling their creations. I'm local, head up to Sonoma regularly, and never tire of spending time on the square.
