“Easy walk, very friendly staff”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 August 2013

Well, there's not a lot to see at the cheese store, but the walk there from the center of Sonoma is easy, past a Clydesdale farm, and the cheese tasting makes it even better. Don't be afraid to ask about cheese you don't know--the staff is SO accommodating with information and bites to taste. We were looking for something to do instead of wine tasting at 9:30 am, and this was just right. We ended up with three small cheeses to use as hors d'oeuvres of our own. The best find: a small plastic cheese board and knife for $2!

Stopped here on our way for an afternoon wine and cheese picnic. Great free samples of whatever you want. Small factory like shop so it's a quick tasting and go

“We went to Vella at the end of our Segway tour and got a thorough tour by Hunt who was very knowlegeable about cheese making.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 August 2013 via mobile

They don't make cheese on Thursday which is the day we went. We did get to learn about the process. There are some cheeses that are only made at Vella and the prices are one of the few bargains in Sonoma. We paired the cheese with fresh baked bread and apples we picked at Valley of the Moon Pottery on our way into town.

“Good cheese and nice local shop”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 24 July 2013

We stopped and picked up cheese to enjoy at our hotel in Sonoma. Very nice shop with local as well as imported cheeses. We also picked up a gift box with several kinds of cheese, crackers and snacks. The cheese is very good and the shop charming. Just a block off the square.

“Wine? Ha!! Cheese!!!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 12 July 2013

Finding ourselves in Sonoma with the intent to visit a winery, my wife and I set out from our hotel to find some cheese and crackers to have for lunch at the winery. We were on our way to the Cheese Factory when we happened to stop in at a shop and started a conversation with the owner. She informed us that there were only two places in town to buy cheese made on-site: Epicureans and Vella. Since we were closer to Vella at the time, we took a short stroll two or three blocks from the Plaza. We thought we were lost, since Vella is somewhat hidden amongst what appear to be residences and small farms.

Boy, are we glad we made the effort!! We were able to try any of the cheeses that they make, with a knowledgeable clerk that gave us the flavor (no pun intended) behind each cheese. We wound up buying three of the cheeses (Monterey Jack, Mezzo Secco and Oro Secco) as well as crackers. Prices are outstanding for the freshness and flavor, but our strong recommendation arises from the welcoming and knowledgeable staff.
