I've been to Sonoma twice. The first time was in 2005 with my husband. We loved the area, especially after visiting Napa, which was very touristy, crowded and full of large, more well-known wineries. This month, I visited with 4 young ladies, some of whom had been to the area and some not. We visited several Sonoma winery tasting rooms and enjoyed some very good wine, but we wanted to take a tour of a winery and were looking for a unique experience. We called Robert Hunter winery after reading the reviews here on TripAdvisor. Having planned a visit to the Napa valley on Day 2, we deviated from our schedule when we found that Robert Hunter could take our group the following day. Arriving at 10 am, we were greeted by Eric, who took us on a tour of the exotic gardens outside of the owners' home. After tasting very generous pours of their delightful reserve estate wines, we were treated to a visit by the owners, Robert and his wife, Ann. The history of this winery is fascinating, and meeting the owners (90 and 86 years old respectively) was a one-of-a-kind experience. Needless to say, the $25 dollar fee for tasting and tour was well worth the investment. If you take one wine tour in Sonoma Vallley, this is it. Great tour and great wine...who could ask for anything more?

This past Friday, my wife, friends and I spent a few hours at the Robert Hunter winery. First off, this was actually at Robert Hunter's private house and not a generic, building that did tasting. We met with Curt, who handles wine making/sales/promotion/marketing/pool cleaning/whatever else needs to be done. He was incredibly informative about the Sonoma Valley wine making "scene". We also toured the house gardens that had a tremendous number of "antique" plants and trees. Some of the plants were over 200 years old and had been carefully maintained and pass down generation after generation. Impressive! We tasted champagne, chardonnay, and 2 other reds. Curt did not pour "tastes"... these were full sized servings! Needless to say we all needed to eat lunch right after visiting. Good thing our guide brought sandwiches... we ate them in a picnic area right on the property. Beautiful views of the valley and vineyards. We also met Robert Hunter's wife and she was incredibly gracious. Overall, a great, intimate, visit to a small boutique winery... definitely beats that big wine house tours where you stand at the bar and try wines you can buy in any store.

The Robert Hunter Winery was the first stop on our private tour with Beau Wine Tours. This had to be the most unique wine tasting experiences we had the whole week in Sonoma/Napa. Not only is this a wine tasting but it is a botanical tour of grounds of Robert and Ann Hunter's home. Ann Hunter's collection of rare and mature plants and trees is absoluately amazing. We walked away with a few bottles of yummy Brut de Noirs as well as a lesson in landscape architecture and arboriculture. Where else could you do that?

If you want something different from your typical Napa/Sonoma wine tasting experience, sign up for the tour and tasting at Robert Hunter. At first, we weren't sure if it would be worth the $25 pp for six of us (and early Sunday start to drive up from the South/East Bay for their 10 am tour), but we're glad we did it.

Kurt is super friendly and knows his stuff as not only the operations guy, but your tour guide. We started with a tour of the beautiful gardens. Several of the unusual specimens were hundreds of years old and most were brought in from Seattle. There was a massive wisteria plant wrapping around a couple of posts and extending across a huge arbor, providing a shaded patio to sip the wine and listen to Kurt talk each. You've got to feel the lambs ear--soft and fuzzy leaves, beautiful flowers. The view of the rolling vineyards below and mountains beyond is like a painting!

The sparkling wine was surprisingly good. We bought a bottle of Pinot that we enjoyed, and when Bob Hunter and his wife came out at the end to greet his guests, he was happy to autograph it for us. We are still amazed at what energy he has at age 90! My wife chatted with him for perhaps 15 minutes after the tour and we took lots of pictures.

It's so nice of the Hunters to open up their home and garden to visitors.
