The Bissell House Bed & Breakfast
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 30 June 2014

I travel 25 - 30 weeks a year for business and on a whim, booked a couple of nights at The Bissel House on a recent visit to LA. I was delightfully surprised and would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a superior Bed & Breakfast experience in Southern California. The Victorian era house sits in a lush garden with on-site parking and close proximity to the 110, 134, 210 and downtown Pasadena. For anyone who knows South Pasadena, this was one of the Orange Grove Ave. estates which is literally a mile or so from the Wrigley Mansion.
I stayed in the Victoria's Room which had a spacious shower, comfortable bed and lovely view overlooking the pool. While I was up and out too early for the home cooked breakfast the first morning (continental was plenty good), Juli, the owner, got up early the second morning and made a quiche with a fresh croissant for me which were both delightful and perfectly cooked. I will absolutely stay here again, and likely any time I come to LA from now on.

I know traveling can be an exhausting thing, so I'm happy you were able to have a comfortable stay with us during your trip. I'm pleased you enjoyed Victoria's Room and the view of the pool -- it's truly a peaceful sight. As for your breakfast, while continental might be good enough, we want all of our guests to experience the true delights of a B&B. I'm glad that despite your early schedule you were still able to have a hot, fresh, home-cooked breakfast.

Knowing that you'd choose to stay here on all trips to LA is a thrill, and we can't wait to have you back.

Take care,
Janet

We were very excited when we first saw the home from the outside. It's really stunning, as is the living room/ dining room upon first entering the house. However, our first impressions were unfortunately misleading.
As guests, we were directed to peruse the binder of area restaurants and activities. Imagine our surprise when we noticed that these listings had not been updated for over FIVE YEARS! Hello?
The breakfast was pretty chi chi pato when considering what one pays to stay here. Also, our innkeeper(s) were socially awkward. It's hard to explain, but they were weird chicks. We question their competency in running a business like this. Based on conversations we had with them, the B+B seemed to comprise a part time job on the side while they pursued other interests.
The pool and the surrounding area were nice enough, but some of the furniture was on the verge of falling apart. The small television set in our room from 1971 was pathetic. We weren't here to watch TV, but really?
We look forward to a long-winded and defensive retort from the B and B owners. We did not complain in person because interpersonal communication with them was uncomfortable at best.

We’re very sorry we occurred in this way for this couple and that we did not meet their specific needs. We are surprised they waited a year to post these comments. We wish them only the best. Our family has fond memories of growing up and living in Rockford. We are happy to address any of the above mentioned remarks to inquirers. With each of our guests, we strive to create an environment that provides beauty, warmth, comfort and an overall quality experience.

Lovely welcoming place to stay and so close to all the major attractions.
We stayed in the "Morning Glory" room on the third floor. Very comfortable, quiet and restful and very clean and decorated for the period of the house.
Breakfast both mornings were delicious, right on time (9am) and well presented. Afternoon snacks and tea or coffee were an extra added perk after long days of visiting all the museums in the area.

Room Tip: If you have trouble with stairs this is not the place to stay.

Returning to the Bissell House in South Pasadena, we immediately felt the calmness and beauty of this beautiful area, grounds, and magnificent house. Easily located from Pasadena and downtown Los Angeles, it is light years away. The tranquility and beauty immediately transported me to another era.

Rooms are expertly decorated, common living room large, and delicious tea and breakfast were served.

Back for the 3rd visit, if I am again anywhere in the area, I will head for the Bissell House.

Room Tip: Have stayed in different rooms each time. All are comfortable; some larger than others with more lig...

My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed our overnighter at the delightful 1880s 3 story mansion. We stayed in the lovely Garden Room on the 3rd floor and it was like a trip back into a kinder, quieter era. The bed felt like a giant, dreamy ice cream sandwich and its sweet succulence made us feel like two teddy bears snugly tucked into a fairy tale. Highly recommended for overstressed
Folks who long for restfulness and the satin dreams of cherubs. Harps not included, although the jacuzzi and breakfast make up for it.

Quaint Victorian home built in 1880s with period furnishings, gracious hosts and gourmet breakfasts made for a great getaway for our anniversary. The 3rd floor Rose room gave us comfort and privacy. A cozy fire in the fireplace, hot water for tea and coffee were always available. Sweets were put out in the afternoon to satisfy the munchies. A pleasant and restful escape.

I recently stayed at the Bissell House Bed and Breakfast in South Pasadena for the 2014 BCS National Championship. First of all, access to the Bissell House was easy and convenient from LAX, with easy access to LA and its' attractions. Secondly, the house and surrounding neighborhood was just beautiful. The rooms were comfortable, clean, and just gorgeous. The breakfast every morning and afternoon tea with cake was great. Our hostess, Julie, was extremely courteous, friendly, and accommodating. I would recommend Bissell House to anyone visiting the Pasadena/LA area.
