Our elegant French friends brought us here and it is such a treasure. The cream of leek soup was delightful - so light and fresh. And then I fell in love with the salad with a simple but perfect dressing. We splurged on escargot, our first outside of France and they were wonderful as was the country pate, which can be either sublime or awful. No disappointments here. As a main course, I had Duck a l'Orange; husband had rabbit. Everything was very tasty. We even managed to get down a slice of Berry Tart and our friends had the Basque Cake which looked wonderful. I was ready to come back the next day! On the down side, the poor sweet waitress ( who managed a smile the entire time) was so overworked; nowhere near enough staff around. If you want a place with ambiance, this is not it, plus you come out of the sunshine to a dreary foggy city. And it was very noisy with a party going on next door. But it's kind of a wonderful ethnic experience plus the food was just downright good. And so inexpensive! I was amazed.

$130 for 4 for dinner? Sutter home for house wine-bad choice! Stuffed quail--should be called stuffed cabbage-never again. Sirloin of lamb--not lamb --mutton. Dessert not included. Waiter spilled wine on my shirt and pants--sorry--no cleaning voucher. Next time I will drive to Winnamucca NV when I want a real Basque experience and a great meal.

We had lunch at the Basque Cultural Center. It is very old school for the San Francisco area. We had Chicken Cordon Bleu, Slices of Roast Leg of Lamb, a Sirloin Steak and Stuffed Quail. We started with a Black Bean Soup and Garden Salads with a creamy dressing that was somewhere between creamy Italian and Caesar. All in all, a very good lunch.

This place has been around for years, but we never tire of it. Think rack of lamb, two meats at dinner, family style soup bowl to share, really good bread, and interesting specials---venison and medallions of lamb tenderloin last time we were there. Each day of the week has a different set meal and there is a regular menu as well.

The hostess is like your gruff old great aunt who runs the dining room her way, and if you just relax and do what she says you'll have great time. Service is attentive without being intrusive.

To the reviewer who complained that Basque food isn't high class and a waste of eating opportunities in SF.....learn some SF history. Basque sheepherders were all over CA and Nevada and most towns, including SF had a Basque boardinghouse/hotel. So if you want to experience something of those days check this place out.

Basque food just isn't high class cuisine. If you got all the way to San Francisco why would you waste one of your dining opportunities eating Basque food??
