On a recent trip to northern California we chose to stay outside of downtown San Francisco to save a few bucks. This hotel is conveniently located near SFO (maybe 2-3 miles north) and the hotel offers a free shuttle. Unfortunately our flight landed well after midnight and the shuttle was not available. We took a cab, which wound up being $25 after tip (holy cow!). Even being used to prices in NYC this seemed really really exorbitant.
The hotel is nicely appointed and has a modern open feel. We had a basic room with a nice queen bed. Room was promptly cleaned each morning and staff were friendly and attentive. Wifi was free and there were no problems with the service. Breakfast was served in the lobby each morning, and at $13 I didn't think it was a bad deal considering the buffet was very diverse with a number of cook to order options. Food in California generally seemed slightly more expensive than what I have experienced on the east coast.
Also, without a car it is a bit difficult to get around. Many people were taking the free shuttle back to the airport to then get on BART. We took our car over to Daly City and parked for free to hop on the BART. Worked out well but it was still a minor hassle. My only major complaint would be on price. This hotel is located inside a large collection of business parks made up of mostly large biotech corporations. It was absolutely dead (nobody on the street) when we were there as it was the weekend. The hotel seemed maybe half full, but prices were still $160 a night. I know San Francisco is an expensive place to visit, but it most other cities this would be a $120 a night hotel. So one star off for a bit of price gouging but it was nothing egregious.
CAR RENTAL - If you are renting a car for your stay in San Fran definitely rent off airport. We were able to get a week long rental at Budget for $230 including all taxes and fees. They were sold out of intermediate cars and even had to upgrade us to a Chrysler 300M. They explained to me that taxes at the airport can be $15-$20 a day than renting from a place only a few miles away. Do your research. Parking at the hotel is free.More
