“Filty, Dirty, Beware Looks Deceiving”
Reviewed 16 June 2008

After finding out all the hotels in Santa Barbara area were booked due to graduation night, we saw a sign that said lodging in Summerland. So we followed the sign and came to Summer land Inn. From the outside appearance looks like a quaint small hotel. BUT LOOKS ARE DECEIVING!!! My husband went into the lobby, which was locked at 7.00 in evening. Owner finally came to the door. We were quoted a price of $129.00 for 2 double beds. The owner never mentioned anything about breakfast. The beds did not match, the decor looked like they had purchased at garage sales. The comforters and blankets had stains on them. The sheets appeared clean, however the beds were very uncomfortable. The carpets were dirty, the room had a musty smell, no ice bucket for ice, which I'm sure they didn't have. The bathrooms were dirty, a couple of thin towels were provided, old bottle of shampoo. The bathtub was held up with duct tape, old bar of soap with pubic hair on it in tub area. Needless to say very uncomfortable and could not wait to get out of there. I would have felt more comfortable sleeping in our car.

I am really surprised that the reviews on Summerland Inn are so bad. We arrived quite late and were very relieved to find a very cheap room for myself,my husband and my son. The lady was friendly and the room was fine. It wasn't five star but then again it wasn't a five star price. Coffee was available on request and the beds were very comfortable. We liked the homely atmosphere and our stay was further enhanced by the discovery of the Summerland Beach Cafe which offered a lovely breakfast at a very reasonable price. The Inn is not pretentious or overpriced but it was comfortable and I would have no hesitation in recommending it.

We stayed here one night. We did not have reservations and found this place through our GPS. We called and she gave the rate of $115 for a room with 2 double beds. We did not reserve and decided to do a drive by. It looked like a very quaint B&B with all of the crank windows open. We were all tired and wanted to sleep so we decided to stay.

Our room number was #1. Upon entering the room we were overcome by a musty smell. The room was very dark and crowded. They put 2 queen sized beds in this room which was way to small. The bedspreads were old and the pillows were horrible. They sewed two flat pillows together to make one hard pillow and all of the pillows for everyone were like this. The TV was on the side of one of the beds on a table. The carpet didn't seem too old but it was dirty and hadn't been vaccuumed in a while. There was a refrigerator in the room but it was dirty inside.

The bathroom was filthy. I am the type of person who does not like to wear shoes when I am getting comfortable and I could feel the dirt on the carpet and on the rug in the bathroom. The floor in the bathroom looked liked it is never mopped. I was totally grossed out and couldn't wait to leave. The sheets did appear to be clean but it was obvious that the owners do not clean at all.

We tried to close the window because it was very chilly at night but the crank didn't work. I went to the office and the doors were locked. I had to ring the bell to get the owner. I explained the problem and she gave me 2 screw drivers. My husband had to fix the crank handle so we could close the window.

We did not have a pleasant stay and would never recommend this place to anyone.

This was my first experience at a bed and breakfast. In that I'd only heard positive reports of B&Bs, the website depiction of the rooms appeared quite charming and the fact that the Inn had the only available rooms in all of the Santa Barbara area on the dates needed, I made the reservations despite the fact that the price was more than I've ever paid anywhere for any accommodation!
At check-in the charge exceeded that which had been quoted when I reserved the rooms by phone, but I had no choice then. Carrying the baggage up 15 or so stairs was a little scary for a 70 year old. The lighting in the room with all working lights turned on can only be described as "dim." I can't even estimate how old the deep dust was that covered virtually everything in the room. The refrigerator had old food in it. The blankets, comforter and top pillows were not inviting. The remote control for the TV was all but useless. The bathroom worked, but that's all. Hwy 101 traffic hummed along outside, probably 200 or so feet from the Inn. The [apparent] owners were sullen of attitude and uncommunicative. "Breakfast" consisted of small coffee cups of coffee and a slice of dry coffeecake from the reception area.
All in all, the experience was not my idea of an even mildly pleasant 2 room, 2-night stay, particularly at $115 and $160 per room, per night charges [total: $550].

  • Liked — Its possibliities, ie., location, charm, warmth, comfort and cleanliness.
  • Disliked — The possibilities were utterly and completely unfulfilled.

We selected two rooms for two nights and made advance reservations. Upon arrival, the owner operator had given one of our rooms away to another patrom. We felt this was "bait and switch". The entry way was very dusty and felt "shop worn". Our rooms were the same way. The mini blinds had coats of dust on them. There is no central air conditioning and the rooms are hot. The once beautiful rooms did not look the same as in the photos on the web site. Some cheap teak copies of antiques have been substiuted. The small refrigerators and mircro waves are old. One had old food in it. One dresser had clothing and old shoes left in it from other quests that had left them behind. No full breakfast was provided. Not like on the photo on the web site - no waffle with fruit and whip cream, juice and coffee in a pretty china cup. No dinning room. A pot of coffee and one plate of sliced coffee cake was placed out at 8 a.m. in the entry way. No customer service or help. The operator did not speak English well and was difficult to communicate with. Too expensive and overpriced! Shame on the new owners!

Actually, we stayed here several years ago when it was charming and clean and under previous ownership. Unfortunately, the current owners have allowed it to deteriorate considerably. When we checked in there was a real lack of communication as to when and what to expect for breakfast. Also, no indication as to check out time. The owner also told us we got a "special rate" but not to discuss it with anyone else or they would be upset which made us wonder what they said to the next guests about our rate. We noticed that the new owners were living in the old dining room area which left nowhere for breakfast except the lobby which was cramped and uninviting or your room (which was also cramped and uninviting). At about 8:15am the next morning a few slices of cake were put out on the lobby table. There was cereal but no milk and some coffee. We decided to head for the nearest cafe. The worst part of the whole experience was the obvious uncleanliness of the room. The toilet paper dispenser fell off the wall totally upon first use. The light was terrible for reading and one cheap flourescent light in the bathroom was burned out! A used cup from a previous guest was still on the mini bar. The shower tiles were dirty and mildewed. It was so obvious that the current owners were just using whatever was left by the previous owners without any upkeep or replacement and that they have no idea what is an acceptable Bed and Breakfast experience let alone an acceptable level of cleanliness and service standards under any circumstances. The current owners don't seem to make any attempt to provide a clean welcoming environment that would make anyone want to return again. At least we were able to get hot water for our shower, upon check-out we observed that another guest had left a note in the key basket that they had no hot water in their room among other complaints and that they were not at all happy! (No one actually checks you out, you just leave your key in a basket). We will not be returning here again and suggest you look elsewhere as well.

Nothing but NEGATIVES in this review. (The worst part of the review is the last paragraph in case you’re thinking of skipping reading this b/c it’s long.) First of all, let me say that my wife and I believe ourselves to be very moderate, tolerant, patient and empathetic couple. If we receive an overcooked steak at a restaurant, we rarely return it and believe in a zen way of life to live in the present and make do with what we have. If we have a poor experience at a restaurant, we still tip the wait staff because we realize they need to make a living.

That said, we were VERY UPSET with our stay at the Summerland Inn (and we don’t get upset very often). We wanted to stay off the main drag in our Santa Barbara weekend stay and when we saw the “lodging sign” on 101, we decided to take the Summerland exit. The inn looked like a classic Victorian B&B’s we’ve stayed at in the past.

In the lobby, there was no “office” just a pedestal as a reception area. The inn keeper/owner would go “in the back” which looks like a living room & kitchen area where they live. We asked if any rooms were available. The owner gave the both of us long “up and downs”, thought for a few seconds, then she quoted us a rate. This REALLY UPSET my wife because she felt like the owner was giving us a rate based on our means (or based on her interpretation of our “means” based on how we look/act).

The owner looks like an immigrant who is just trying to make a living in this country. I’m 100% for the American Dream, but when you’re on a once-a-year vacation and you pay good money for a weekend stay, you expect fair service. I’m not even talking Hilton quality service… or even Holiday Inn… heck, I’ll settle for Travel Lodge or Howard Johnson’s level service!

So she walks us to the room BAREFOOT. She tells us nothing about the amenities, when the continental breakfast would be, if any, etc. The attached lighting outside are all florescent, probably to save money. The driveway/parking lot lights are all solar lights, probably to save money. The lighting was very dim and while we didn’t feel not safe, it’s not like a typical hotel parking lot where there is average lighting.

Inside the room, there is a fan running full blast b/c they just cleaned the carpet. The sign on the door indicating the room # had fallen off and was laying on the ground. Two of three lamps were unplugged. The cable box was unplugged. The remote control was NOT PROGRAMMED. To plug in the cable box, you had to unplug one of the lamps!

The fridge is right next to the bed, which means we won’t be able to sleep unless we unplug it! Guess we can’t keep any drinks cold overnight. Why don’t they add a electrical outlet and put the fridge in the closet?

The furniture looks like it’s a hodge-podge collection of leftovers. The owner warned us not to kick our feet against the bed frame which sticks out on both corners. Despite the warning, we must kicked ourselves 8 times total. Yes, we knew about the bed frame but the room layout was so bad that we still kicked ourselves. The owner obviously knew about this which is why she warned us. If so many other guests have kicked the bed frame too, why don’t they just fix it?

The worst part of the room, however, is that the bathroom was NOT cleaned. There was brown stuff in the toilet and a used razor in the shower. There were NO towels. The shampoos are generic low-end brands except for a pumper for hand soap. The reason they use a pumper is because it is CHEAPER than giving each guest a new bar of soap. Also, the provided shampoo (no conditioner) was not only generic low-end shampoo, BUT IT WAS REFILLED!! Yes, it was refilled and not a brand new bottle. This was clearly obvious based on the age of the label (gets wet over time) and looseness of the cap. We decided to go to the grocery store and buy our own soaps and towels. Reading some other reviews (after we already checked-in), we realized we would only receive cheap, low-end towels that would be very scratchy; and odds are they would not even make up the room and replace the towels. We thought we’d just take matters into our own hands here.

In summary, I’d rather stay at a Motel 6. At least they have clean bathrooms and when they leave the light on, it’s not a florescent or solar light.
