Motel 6 Sunnyvale North
Ranked #22 of 33 Hotels in Sunnyvale
Reviewed 15 August 2012

Seriouosly, it is $60 for a single, for a midweek stay in the heart of Silicon Valley.
I don't expect much except a clean room with the items required, such as a bathroom, bed, and tv.

The room was clean. I was on the side by the pool, but didn't have noise issues during my stay. I don't know if the street side would be noisier. The pool looked clean, but I didn't use it. The WIFI fee was $3, but a bit slow, however, it was ok for standard browsing. So, the place was clean. I didn't notice any shady characters hanging around. It shares a parking lot with Burger King, so "food" is really close. There is a Hobees and, I think, a Denny's across the street, next to the lower rated Motel 6, so don't go to the wrong one. Sunnyvale North is next to the Burger King.. For $60, it was a good value, as values in this area go. I think the weekly rate is about $340 (plus tax). Maximum stay is 28 days, then you have to be gone for a week. Interesting law. I only stayed a day though. I believe the daily rate for 2 is about $5 or $6 more.
Notes: The soap is adequate for getting clean, but recommend bringing your own. Towels are small, but I managed to dry with the 2 of them :). I didn't like the pillow (small, non fluffy)
I don't normally stay at Motel 6, but this was the best one I have ever stayed at.

Room Tip: I would suggest not getting rooms on the parking lot side.

I needed to stay two times in the area and choose the Motel6 North (!) in Sunnyvale, CA.
Reception staff was very friendly and helpful, the rooms are Motel6 rooms standards, clean !!
I requested a quiet room on the top floor which they provided for each stay. Teh structure of the building really allows some nice pivacy.
Overall, a good expereince and I can recommend this Motel6 as an effortable place to stay in the south bay area.

If you are visiting Silicon Valley and need inexpensive but good quality accommodation, look no further than Motel 6. Their weekly rate is even better than the already reasonable daily rate. It is conveniently located, and a 20 min walk away from the Sunnyvale Caltrain station which can take you anywhere in the Bay area. The Burger King and Denny's joints nearby are perfect for food at odd hours. As for the room itself, the furnishings are basic but perfectly serviceable. The bathroom was surprisingly spacious and very clean. And the staff, helpful as ever. The $3 per day wi-fi rocks too. Other hotels in the vicinity like Best Western and Comfort suites are significantly more expensive and don't offer a lot more (except breakfast).

My room was very nice and I really have no complaints. The only fly in the ointment was the pillows. I like pillows on the thin and flat side as opposed to very thick and "sturdy" ones as were these. I sleep on my side and/or stomach and don't like big fat pillows. Oh, by the way, there are TWO Motel 6's in Sunnyvale.....North and South. But physically they are directly across the street from each other, so it is a moot point.

Just saying it's a Motel 6 is a good starting point. Its somewhere to stop. Efficient and friendly staff, clean room, good value for location and product - bear in mind that this is right in Silicon Valley. Close to Highway 101, but a little tricky to find as there are 2 Motel 6's close together here and it was at night and dark but after a few minutes I found it. Burger King immediately adjacent, other food outlets nearby too and gas station across the road. I drove on to San Francisco Airport next morning which only took about 40 minutes (although it was a Sunday). Wi-fi cost $2.99 a day and worked a treat.

Stayed here on an extended stay for a few weeks while my apartment was getting renovated. During this time I didn’t have a single issue, I felt safe at all hours of day and night, and had no problems leaving my car in the parking lot. This is a Motel 6, not a 5 star suite, set your expectations accordingly. Yes, you will hear the occasional noisy neighbor, people walking by, people having sex, or the noise of kids playing in the pool. Room service for extended stay guest is only twice a week for towels and a vacuum, the last day they will do a full clean up. There’s a rule that you cannot stay for more than 3 weeks continuously, after 3 weeks you have to leave for at least one week to be able to come back for another 3 weeks - must be some sort of law or something. Cockroaches? during several weeks I only say one tiny baby one, nothing else.

Internet access: well, this is the only thing I do have a complaint about and the only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5. They use Meraki Wi-Fi routers here, they’re installed in the attic of the third floor, so for starters, the signal down on the first floor is not good – definitely get a room on the third floor for good strong Wi-Fi signal. The issue was not so much the signal levels but the connectivity from the router outbound to the Internet; it kept dropping, and dropping. Sometimes it dropped several times per hour, you would have to wait 3 to 5 minutes with no access to the Internet while the router would get access to the Internet again. I called Motel 6 tech support and all they can do is reboot the router, which accomplishes nothing, the issue still remains. Even with this you can still work throughout the day and get periods of continuous access with no interruptions. I was able to successfully carry out several WebEx and Skype meetings without trouble. To check the status of your connection go to this URL while connected to the hotel’s Wi-Fi: http://setup.meraki.com/ The motel charges $2.99 per day for Wi-Fi access, they will give you an 8 character long alphanumeric code that is good for 24 hours. The slowest times are during the evening and night when most guests are in their rooms, this is shared Wi-Fi so it will slow down considerably during those hours, during the day its ok. The Wi-Fi here also works with iPad and iPhones too, but don’t try to download a large app, you will get disconnected to often it will not complete. As far as cell phone signal, I use AT&T and it was good on the third floor, still you will get disconnected occasionally – probably due more to an oversubscribed antenna than anything else. Signal on the first floor is very poor tough, again, get a room on the third floor and you’re set.

TV is a small 17”CRT tube analog TV with some local channels and HBO, good enough to watch the news.

The main reason I stayed here was because of the pet policy Motel 6 has, free no extra charge pet friendly. You can’t imagine how difficult it is to find a hotel/motel in this area that accepts pets, and if they do they charge these extremely high “deposits” of $150 or $15 extra per day. During my stay I saw several other guests with pets too, large dogs, small dogs, cats, and they all got along. The only thing is that you cannot leave your pet unattended alone in the room, if you’re going out you have to take the pet with you – and it’s good, because the dog might start to bark nonstop and annoy the other guests or the maid might need to come in and won’t be able to clean. Hint, the rooms on the first floor have interconnecting doors, if the guest next door has a dog too, they will sniff each other and start barking at each other, so ask for a room without these common doors to avoid this.

The hotel is next door to a popular night club, so it gets busy as early as Thursday nights all the way through Saturday evenings. There’s no noise, just a lot of people and cars taking up all the parking spaces, all of them, even the adjacent streets are jam packed. So just do like at the mall, go around a few times and you’ll see someone leaving and you’ll get a spot. Also there’s no trouble with rowdy patrons since Sunnyvale police shows up in force and keeps things under control.

Believe it or not, the architecture of this building is quite nice, it’s symmetrical and has nice balconies, it gives you the feeling of being at a hotel in the beach, somewhere in Cancun.. really! It’s very well laid out.

There’s a washer/dryer next to the lobby and you can get your clothes washed and dried for about $3, the machines are in good working order and they also have three vending machines in the lobby with everything from soft drinks, candy, soap, snacks, to condoms and Tylenol.

The room was clean although small; the bathroom is relatively large, standard shower. One thing missing is that there’s no fridge or microwave (except in the large corner units), so not much you can heat, cook or store food wise. There’s a desk area that is big and good for working, you can put your laptop and speakers there and work all day long, the chair is not the best, it gets uncomfortable after a few hours so maybe bring in a cushion for extra support.

Room Tip: Get room on the third floor for bettwe WiFi and cell reception
