“Clean, budget option with nice view”
Reviewed 20 August 2014

Pepper Tree is a clean, budget-friendly place to stay in Tahoe City. It is very convenient as it is right on the main strip of town and is a short walk to the public beach. The room was pretty small, but bed was comfortable, and the owners obviously take pride in maintaining the property. We appreciated having a larger dorm-room style microwave/fridge combo in our room. The coffee maker also was very good as it used whole beans that could be freshly ground in your room.

The breakfast options were a little better than the typical continental breakfast and suited our needs. The bonus is the lake view from the balcony on the 3rd floor up. The hotel is on the other side of the road from the lake, but for a place that is an inexpensive as this, we were pleased to have any view. There is also a nice patio on the 3rd floor and a small but well-maintained pool on the 2nd floor.

The downside is the road noise, but if isn't too bad a night, even when the windows are open. I would suggest this as a nice option (in a field of egregiously expensive places) for the budget traveller.

Room Tip: Rooms 1-4 on the 3rd through top floors have the best lake view. Rooms 5 are ok views but are a litt...

Based on their Website, I didn't expect too much more (hotel was booked as part of a wedding block). But for the kind of money paid, overall, I certainly would like to have had a better experience. Saving grace was that the bed was comfortable. Other than that, where do I start? Due to being configured old motel style (although 7 floors tall) with exterior passage-ways leading directly to room doors, only way to get privacy for dressing was to pull the curtains or dress in the tiny bathroom. But with the curtains closed, the room was a cave, not helped by the 3-4 dim, orange-glow wall sconces. Also, no AC. While that's fine after about 2:00 a.m. when the cool mountain air finally infiltrates the hotel -- even with the old-style table fan whirring away -- it makes getting to sleep a little tough. Of course, on Friday and, particularly, Saturday night, getting to sleep before 2:30 a.m. was additionally challenged by the street noise of Tahoe City's main drag just in front of the property, nearby loud bands and at evening's end, revelers leaving bars and heading home. For a woman traveling alone, the idea of leaving a huge window open to the night air on a common walk-way was uncomfortable, but I got over that fear because it otherwise would have been an oven in the room. Bathroom was tiny, tiny, tiny. Anything placed on the minimal counter was easily knocked off...and straight into the toilet. Shower was a sad, plastic-surround style. Of course, no magnifying mirror (and no full-length mirror anywhere in the room). "Closet" is a dark, incredibly narrow cubby around the wall in the back of the room (light didn't work). "Throw" at foot of the bed was visibly stained (noticed staff replaced it after the first night...or flipped it over). Furniture was in good condition...but looked like it was styled in the 1970's. Elevator slower than molasses. No hot tub. On the good side, plenty of convenient parking. Sweeping views of the lake. And the woman who works the front desk is very nice. Given the option, won't stay here again. Would head just down the road to Sunnyside Inn or rent a home on VRBO. Perhaps -- at Sunnyside -- not as nice a view, but quieter, more upscale, on-site restaurant and activities, directly on the lake (yes, more pricey). Tahoe is great. Pepper Tree in is just a bed.

Room Tip: Suggest a room in the "tower". Higher the floor and further to the far end of the short w...

Semi last minute reservation, was the only place I could find a room. Jessica helped me, based on conversation chose to spend a little more and get a 6th floor room vs 5th Floor. Arrived there about 1:00, reception was prompt and manager was nice - Was given a key to room 506. Hopped off the elevator to find the room was right behind a tree... room was very small but clean and quaint - no complaints. Hotel is nicely located, can walk to a ton of restaurants, shops, bars... We brought our bikes and road them to Homewood - was very nice. We were there on a hot and humid day - did not cool down much that night, and the room was very hot - only blanket option was a very thick comforter - no thinner blanket, and no Air Conditioning (they had a note in the lobby advising that is common in Tahoe City) - had to have the windows open & being right next to the elevator, had to hear folks coming and going - and the road noise. Breakfast is what it is, no surprises - typical, and does the job - upon check out advised on the wrong room - was credited back no problems. I would stay here again no problem - but would make sure to ask for rooms 2-5 with 3 & 4 being the prime (ie 503, 504) - Rooms ending in 6 are behind a tree and right next to the elevator, room's with a 1 are right next to the stairs

Room Tip: Pick rooms ending in a 2-4 (not 1 or 6) if staying in the "tower" - better view

The place is clean, its old and like others it shows it age. Our room was a little cramped but we made due (three adults and a baby). We were on the 4th floor and the view was breathtaking. Free breakfast, but they could of offered fresh fruit and the breakfast burrito's were packaged and you had to heat them in the microwaved. A lot of things to see were within walking distance. Very quiet. All in all, Nice hotel, I will stay again when I'm in the area.

Room Tip: ask for a room without an obstructed view of the lake.

This hotel is one of the only ones on the North shore that is over a few stories tall. The top 2 floors give you a 5 star lake view at budget prices. The rooms are not large, but breakfast is included, saving you even more money. There are plenty of restaurants and activities within walking distance. There is a public lake shore park right across the street.

Not a fancy property, but very centrally located. My rating is four stars for the value for the dollar.

Not the most luxurious nor beautiful property which shows a bit of age in the commons but the place is clean, the rates are fair, all the rooms face the lake and the guests in the tower - except the ones behind the staircase - have unobstructed views of the lake - and the fireworks during the 4th of July holiday. This is my 2nd stay there and we might do it again next year. Walking distance from the property are bars, restaurants, cafes, a Safeway supermarket for all your needs and free parking on site. This is a central location so Tahoe City gets very busy during holidays. Abandon the car and walk to the lakeshore/beach down below across the street. Swimming pool is at street level but hidden from view and above is a sort of sundeck with chairs facing the lake and tables. Some folks do get a little loud on property but a call to the front desk will usually resolve any issues quickly. Free breakfast every morning and every room has a coffee maker, a fridge and a microwave.

Room Tip: Book one year ahead for holiday stays.
