We were lucky enough to have a train pass through within 5 minutes of our parking at the viewing area. Nice, peaceful spot and one of those places you may only visit once, but worth doing the one time. Easy enough to get off the Keene exit of Rte 58 and it's about 3 miles down the road. Stop at the Keene Café for breakfast or lunch.

We drove to the viewpoint from Tehachapi on the Woodford road, arriving at the viewpoint for the Loop at a slow speed due to the winding road (fairly high and without any safety barriers). Their is very limited parking but we had no problems. Just as we got out of the car a train started the ascent of the Loop. It was a remarkable sight to see. Just up from the viewpoint is a dirt track which is worth walking along to get an even better view. There are no facilities, very little parking and no decent pathway to the better viewpoints. Why did I give it 5 out of 5? Watching the immensely long train navigate the spiral was a quite unique experience - at one point we could see three sections of the train on different parts of the Loop 'parallel' to each other. However, we met someone the same day who had waited 45 minutes without seeing a train (unlucky as up to 40 trains a day go round the Loop), so, timing is everything - and so is luck.

When your Garmin GPS takes you down the highway you may think it’s lying when it says “Tehachapi Loop on left”. We kept driving because there was no parking spot, no building, nothing. We drove until we could turn around and try again. Someone was standing on the side of the road so we stopped and then noticed the 2 monuments. I guess our timing was also bad because there was only a short train stopped there. Maybe a trip to the Tehachapi train museum could tell you the best time to go, but their hours are limited.

I love the place. Unfortunately i didn't see any train. Theres only 5 cars or truck that can fit across the markers. I came to check it out cause my 6 yr old son is into trains . As i mentioned its only for train enthusiast. If not then you'll find the place boring.

I've hung out at the plaque and I've seen it countless times from the 58 freeway, at various stages, and sometimes the freight trains are so longer they fill the looping tunnel and extend out from both ends noticeably.
