We had the pleasure of having lunch at this "little jewel" in downtown Templeton. Having won a gift certificate the previous night, we thought we would check it out prior to heading home from a weekend getaway. This little town is lucky to have so many nice eating establishments that cater to the dinner crowd, but this one will certainly have us coming back for lunch! Our lunch was cooked to order and was made with fresh ingredients. My husband had the burger on a delicious brioche roll and I had a crab cake sandwich that was delicate and flavorfull. Our salads were also delicious. After much debate we settled on sharing a desert, afterall they are also a bakery! We shared a gluten free slice of freshly made carrot cake that melted in our mouth!

California is full of small working towns that due to their size, sometimes don't even require a traffic signal. Generally off the main roadways, they are true gems when they are home to outstanding restaurants. Templeton has two such eating establishments, making it hard to decide where to eat when we pass through there on our drives between the Monterey Peninsula and Los Angeles.
We love Hoovers, have eaten there many times and have never left disappointed. But this review is about a newer discovery - Roost. In a nutshell, Jim Griffin has founded a wonderful restaurant and we have enjoyed each meal we have had there but Jim really deserves endless credit for bringing baker Richard Shopshear to Templeton.
I don't know the backstory, but Richard is a true baking genius and could be working in any major restaurant in any city in the world. Each piece of pastry is perfect - light, crunchy or soft depending on the intent. Fresh, seasonal fruit compliments any given item according to Richard's intent. We have never had a piece we didn't love and usually buy enough for the next day, or two - never mind our waistlines!
Next door is a pizza place also owned by Jim - we can't wait to try it also.
Carry on gentleman - we love what you do.

What a lovely addition to Templeton! This place has a lovely collection of pastries to go with the great coffee. With the outside tables, this local gathering place attracts people, walking, biking and out with the dogs! The lunch sandwiches have been excellent. One of my favorites is the muffins, after they have been warmed! Give it a try and you will be coming back. I am!

On a long drive from Santa Cruz to Ventura I pulled off in Templeton looking for a quick bite and coffee early on Sunday morning. I was lucky enough to stumble across the Roost and had an excellent cup of coffee along with an egg and chorizo quiche that was outstanding! This place is not your ordinary bakery/coffee shop, they are doing some special things with baked goods. If you happen to be in this neighborhood, stop and give them a try.
