Loch Leven Lodge
Reviewed 15 July 2013

just spent a weekend at loch leven lodge on donner lake. it an older property. best described as rustic charm. rooms all have lake front views. the "suites" have an additional sofa, shared deck, and small kitchenettes. everything is pretty dated, but that is exactly the charm of the place. the rooms are on the small side and with all the stained wood, can be a little bit dark. the bathrooms are tiny, and the showers even tinier. the queen bed was comfortable and the room was spotlessly clean. the manager debbie was an absolute delight, personable, charming, informative - very laid back, a perfect match to lazy feel of this old resort. it isn't the rotz carleton, but maked no pretense to be anything other than what it is - funky, cozy, rustic - perched right on the lake with spectacular views. we'll be back!

Stayed here last year in September during a Tough Mudder weekend in Tahoe. The room we got is very small. The ceilings are low and walls are a bit thin. It was hard not to listen to a couple "doing their business" early one morning. The location is nice. It is within a few minutes drive to downtown Truckee where there are plenty of restaurants. The wooden deck is great and all the rooms are facing the lake so it is absolutely beautiful. You can open your curtains and have the view of the lake. They have patio furnitures that you can use as well. Like one person here already commented. There is not always a person at the front desk. When we arrived, there was a note of the door that the lodge manager is out and will be back at a certain time. She left a phone number so we called her and left a message. We couldn't check in so we went to the patio and relaxed. She showed up not too long so it was no big deal. She was actually very pleasant. Also, there is no daily housekeeping. We met a family staying at the lodge's Town House who were so nice to give us a tour of their rooms. We would definitely come back with our friends and book the Town House. It's a great unit is you have small kids or want to share with some friends who wouldn't mind sleeping in the bunk beds.

Rooms are old and in need of updating as they are quite dark. The patio was nice except for the fact that there was a private party the day we were there and we felt like intruders. Walls are thin and in need of insulation. Kids in the room next to ours were being normal kids but we could hear everything. The patio view overlooking the lake is gorgeous, small and offers no privacy-3 foot high lattice separates each deck area, Office was closed when we arrived at 2pm and checked out at 10am- though a note on the office door indicated they were in the back. Same note was there when we went back at 2pm after we had checked out to get our car. Kitchen ameneties were plentiful but make sure if you want creamer for coffee in AM to bring some with you. No routine daily housekeeping. Would use again if I had no alternative, but would suggest other locations in Truckee or Donner Lake unless being on the lake is your priority.

Room Tip: Request a room on the end with only one adjacent wall.

I can't say enough about this great lodge in Truckee. It may not look like much from the outside but it is a gem! When you open your front door you see Donner Lake spread out in front of you. Each room has a balcony or deck and there is a huge deck, hot tub, outdoor grill. It is close enough to downtown Truckee for shopping and such but is tucked away so you can enjoy the quiet of this beautiful small lake. We also appreciated the kitchenette so we didn't have to have restaurant food for every meal. We hope to visit again!

This is a wonderful quaint little hotel right on Donner Lake. Each room opens up to the lake and there's a wonderful deck you walk out onto that is shared with other guests but there's plenty of room to feel on your own. The owners and manager are wonderful, accommodating people and will make sure your stay is very pleasant.

This small lodge on Donner Lake was just what we were looking for! The staff were very helpful-we needed to borrow a cooler and they found one for us. The room was compact but just right for two. The kitchenette had everything we needed. Our balcony overlooked Lake Donner. Enjoyed the hot tub - it was clean and fully functional. We enjoyed the beauty of the lake - away from traffic, noise and tourist shops. We definitely stay here again.

A nice family owned place with old fashioned but updated rooms. Great views over Donner Lake and a nice hot tub. They have small but well equipped kitchenettes but the bathrooms are a bit small. Lots of old style wood panelling from a bygone, and much preferrable, era.
Not cheap but still good value.
