My partner and I come to the Tahoe area once a year and play 4 or 5 course in the Truckee area.
Old Greenwood stands out by far, as our worst experience on a very nice course. Instead of offering a quality golf experience at a fairly expensive 150 dollars, it seems management is more concerned with cramming as many players on the course as possible. When we arrived at our 1 pm tee time at 12:55 there were 4 foursome groups backed up to tee off. We are not scratch golfers but we understand golf rules of etiquette that includes the concept of fast play, not just for us but for the benefit of the golfers behind us. It seems that the management at Greenwood is either unable or unwilling to apply common sense to encourage players to move at a reasonable pace. In addition to playing a very large number of players in a shotgun tournament, many who were beginning golfers at best, they failed to supervise the pace of play. We saw just one Marshall only one time during our very slow 5 hour round of golf. The Marshall pushed back our complaint and told us this was reasonable. One player in my foursome spoke with the on duty manager in the pro shop after the round. He told us, he also received the same short, curt, " so what attitude". I am sorry but any decent golfer who has been put through this kind of golf round knows this is highly inappropriate and makes the golfing truly unpleasant. The most generous time allotment even at any resort course in the country uses 4.5 hours as a very liberal standard and any golfer that knows the proper way to play will tell you that 4.5 hours is not necessary and unduly slow. Even beginning golfers who know the proper procedures and course management can complete a round in less than 4.5 hours. No one wants to wait 5 minutes for each and every swing they take and to be constantly waiting at the next tee box while the group in front plays golf like there is no one waiting. We understand that many golfers; especially beginning golfers do not understand the golf rules of etiquette which includes playing at a reasonable pace and waving through faster players who are endlessly waiting for them to finish a hole. However, it is the golf course Marshall and Pro that is responsible for enforcing those rules even if it results in a few ruffled feathers with a paying customer. It is our experience that the slow players are usually small in number but it only takes one foursome to create havoc for everyone behind them especially when you have poor course management. Old Greenwood, sorry, you are off our list of quality golf venues. We are not going to return until we can be assured that there is a more professional approach to your course management. i would advise other golfers to call and ask the pro shop about the player load on that day in advance and NEVER book a tee time when a shotgun tournament is being inserted into the mid day star times. At least not at this course. There are so many better options in the Tahoe area and we suspect that many other golfers who love a quality round of golf feel the same. If you want to run your course with no attention to a quality golf experience, please go ahead. We would rather take a five hour walk in the park. It is far more pleasant, we don’t have to stand around and wait and the experience is whole lot cheaper.
