“3rd Tallest Tree in the World”
Reviewed 20 September 2012

Between December 1996 and August 2000, the tallest tree in Montgomery Woods, named the Mendocino Tree, was the world's tallest known tree. The tree is over 366 feet tall making it 13 feet shorter than the now tallest tree.

We took Mountain View Rd from the south on Hwy 1 and returned on the Compche-Ukiah road. The grove was amazing and worth the drive.

“beautiful Montgomery Woods”
Reviewed 5 January 2008

Ah, the redwoods! Nothing is quite as beautiful or tranquil as a grove of redwoods. Because this is not on main roads, few have found this treasure so it remains in a more natural state than most redwood groves. The Mendocino tree is located in Montgomery Woods but not identified in order to protect its identity. The park is located on Orr Springs Road, a dirt road, 30-45 minutes west of town.
The developed area of Montgomery Woods State Park is small with trails that are easy to navigate but not appropriate for anyone with disabilities as they are still dirt and not level. It's perfect for families with young children as you get a big bang for your buck--small area with dramatic scenery. There are fern "forests" that are six feet tall, a little brook that goes along (and sometimes across) the trail, a small meadow, and a multitude of wildlife.

Take nothing and leave only footprints. Enjoy!
