Owner description: A coast redwood growing in Montgomery Woods State Reserve near Ukiah, is the tallest known tree in the world. It stands five stories higher than the Statue of Liberty.

We traveled through the Giant Redwoods near Oregon last year and decided to visit Montgomery State Reserve to walk the trail. Guess we should have read additional information as NO DOGS are allowed on the trails and we brought our Certified Therapy Dog (not a working dog) all the way up and down the narrow hairpin turns for almost an hour before arriving and seeing the "no dogs" signs. Got out for a few minutes to stretch our legs, then got back in and drove all the way back to Ukiah. The drive was very scenic but we wish we had known before driving so far that dogs are not allowed.

Forget the thousands of visitors at Muir Woods. This beautiful and under-visited stand of redwoods is the go-to-place to view these ancient, majestic living beings in solitude. It is a good hike for families and offers parking and restrooms, but little else in terms of amenities. That's a good thing in my book.

Bring a camera, too, because there many things to photograph here.

Couple of mile hike, fairly flat, very doable with family, and you get to see some of the tallest tree in the world. This hike boasts 3rd highest tree in the world.

Well worth the "hairpin turn" drive to visit. Magnificient old growth redwoods and hardly any other visitors. Strongly recommend!!

Montgomery Woods is hidden along a narrow, windy back road (Orr Springs) and up a short but steep trail. Therefore, not many visit. The beautiful hanging valley where this tree, thought to be the tallest living thing in the world from 2000 until taller specimens were found in 2006, this tree, and its grove of near equals, is a treasure. My children have been coming here since they were sprouts, and still (in their 40s) talk of the place in awed voices. I feel the same way.
