Llancarfan is a picturesque village, with a river ford, in the SE of the Vale of Glamorgan, close to Cardiff. The pub has a stone walled dining room and an ambitious menu, with several choices of fish. The food is beautifully cooked and the portions filling: I had the tartiflette, made with brie, which was sensational. Sensible prices, therefore great value for money. Visit the church next door if you get a chance to see the recently uncovered medieval wall paintings. Booking essential Friday, Saturday evenings and Sunday lunchtime. Easy parking.

I have eaten at the Fox and Hounds on many occasions and so I knew there would be a god menu including many specials. We were welcomed by Sue who showed us to our table. There is a good wine list so I found a nice red.

The food is always delicious and there are always generous helpings. My birthday with family was a great success finished with a good malt in the company of the regulars.

My thanks to Sue and John Millard and their team for a most enjoyable evening.

My wife and I visited this establishment at the end of October.

On arrival, staff were very friendly and we were given a warm reception by the proprietress who showed us to our room which was a good size with a sofa and comfortable bed. Standard hot drink making facilities were supplied as was a wide screen television with all the freeview channels.

I tend to judge hotels on the standard of the en suite facility and was let down on my initial impressions of the hotel by cracked tile grouting and mould around the basin and bath fittings. The standard of the original workmanship was poor which probably contributed to the overall condition.
I know this was at the end of the season but there was no reason for things to have been allowed to get so far.

We ate in the restaurant on the first night but were disappointed by the standard of the food. We had read too many rave reviews of the place which gave us high expectations which weren't really fulfilled. Breakfast on the other hand was excellent although we did find it a bit disconcerting being asked in the evening what we wanted the next day.

At the price of the room, I don't think we will be staying there again. Definitely not the experience we were expecting.

Room Tip: Access to upstairs is not to be recommended for anyone with mobility problems. The alternative emerg...

we stayed at the Fox and Hounds last night (26th Oct) and actually only originally booked it because we couldn't get any accommodation nearer Cardiff due to the rugby..but what a find! - gorgeous old riverside building in a lovely well kept village. Our hosts Sue & John were welcoming, friendly and helpful. Although we were eating out at a family party we returned in time for drinks in the bar and again found a welcoming atmosphere and enjoyed chatting to a few of the locals who also clearly love the place!. Rooms were cosy and clean and breakfast was excellent with good quality ingredients and served in their lovely character filled dining room. We would definitely like to return here!

This out of the way Hostelry provides a throw back in time combing that with modern standards of welcome, friendly staff of all ages, suffice to say it is the centre of the village which comprises a church, school and the Fox and Hounds surrounded by a village of modern and historical housing, a gurgling stream runs at the back of a stylish garden all this in quiet surroundings and of course a delightful welsh countryside back drop, as well as good locally produed food, served on piping hot plates
and the marmalade is to die for,the evenings one will find the guests mingling with the locals and an excellent kitchen with a varied menu
The owners have ensured the maintenance of the place making it the focal point of local meetings and good cause support ,it has its own little gift shop and the morning papers come from out of the village
and charity support, has to be visited to believe such places still exist in this ever more hectic environment

Room Tip: they are all equally functional clean and airy

Llancafan is in the middle of no-where. Choose carefully which road/lane to approach by. I know the school bus gets there but I would hire a very small car to reverse into field gateways or wider bits along the hedgerows next time I go there! You do drive through a farmyard and cross a ford on one route! It's worth discovering this lovely old inn. The most recent owners have given it a make-over and have 5/6 rooms for B&B. You have to open a tiny door you don't realize is there to go up a set of stairs that twist to get to them. Comfy beds, pleasant and light decor, cute old style windows, but modern bathrooms! Cute and cozy for a quiet night's sleep. Do stay a while at the bar before going up and chat with the locals to hear the fascinating history of the village.
Order breakfast before going to bed and Sue will have it ready for you as soon as you come down. I had a simple bowl of lovely fresh berries and tea and toast, but other members of our party had the full English plate and were very happy. It is a place to return to and feel a part of the community.

We're a group of mature golfers in our 22nd year of twice yearly tours round the UK. We like single occupancy rooms - some pub / hotels don't want to use majority / all of their rooms this way. John at Fox & Hounds was delighted to take us. All rooms superb and probably the most powerful showers of anywhere we've stayed. Good hand pulled real ales, excellent food and comprehensive wine list - try the New Zealand pinot noir - nectar! Sue and two other ladies - Suzanne and Nicola made us feel really welcome and nothing too much trouble.

I confess ordering your cooked breakfast the night before is unusual, but made a lot of sense. The bowls of fresh fruit were thoughtful and a good mix. Maybe a table with a bowl of grapefruit and jugs of fruit juice would be a good option, but this is not a complaint.

We've re-visited one or two places we've stayed at - the Fox & Hounds was so good I reckon we might evne be back there for our Spring 2014 tour. Well done all of you - service and friendliness at the level you provide is rare

Room Tip: They're all good and no traffic noise - not even a church bell to kepe you awake
