Four of us stayed at the Union in early August. It was a wonderful experience. The rooms were bright, very attractive. The private bathrooms were immaculate and well-supplied. Our group occupied three different rooms. Our breakfast was brought up to the second floor and laid out family-style at a special place in the hall. It included eggs, fruit and cereals and was very tasty. We enjoyed it out on the porch overlooking the main street. There is also a very attractive restaurant on the first floor. We would certainly recommend The Union to anyone who visiting the area. It absolutely fulfilled our highest expectations of a bed and breakfast.

I had the pleasure of staying at the Union Inn last spring. I have not forgotten the enjoyable stay that I had. I do plan on returning this summer.

We had a memorable Memorial Day weekend in California's Gold Country. A major reason was our hotel, the Volcano Union Inn (www.volcanounioninn.net, (209) 296-7711). The Inn was built in 1880. It has four rooms, all on the second floor: two large rooms with king-size beds at the front of the building, and two smaller rooms with queen-size beds at the rear. Each room has a full bath. If it's a rainy day, and you want to hole up in your room, there's a bookcase full of videos to choose from to watch on the VCR, or you can just watch cable TV. The front rooms open onto the front porch. There is no porch in the rear. We booked the two king-size rooms (they're huge) for $150 each, and had the front porch to ourselves. After a day's adventures, we'd sit on the porch and watch life in Volcano, as we drank beer and wine, snacked on cheese and crackers, and enjoyed the town idyll. Every now and then a car would drive by. One of the king-size rooms has a free-standing tub, and separate shower. The other king-size room has a shower in the tub. The beds were very comfortable. Downstairs, there's a six-stool bar serving wine and beer, a comfy couch, and a grand piano. And, oh yes, a pool table, too. There's also a dining room where you can eat breakfast, lunch, and dinner, if you wish. Did I mention that breakfast is included? It's sumptuous. If you're expecting the Ritz-Carlton, the Volcano Union Inn is not for you. Just like the old-time trolley cars in San Francisco make you smile because they're a wonderful slice of the past, so does the Volcano Union Inn. The proprietress, Laurie Lockhart, is warmth personified. She made our breakfast and tended bar. She gave us tourist tips and told us where to find a good pizza. Chris, the chef, is a wonderful cook. Our meals were down home, with generous portions. On Sunday evening, because we requested it, Laurie arranged a family-style meal for us. Laurie's daughter was there, as was Laurie's 84-year old father. Chris prepared baked chicken, mashed potatoes, salad, and fresh vegetables. After the food was served, Chris and Laurie joined us at the table. After dinner, we retired to the bar, where Laurie's father played old standards on the piano, and we all sang along. It's a Grand Old Flag, Yankee Doodle Dandy, and on and on, until we were all sung out. While we were having a grand old time, several people tried to come in off the street, but Laurie wouldn't let them in. This was a private party, just for us! When it came time to go home, we were loathe to leave. The Volcano Union Inn is a small inn with a big heart. We will definitely return.
