We stopped on a drive down the levee road south of Sacramento. What we found were great sandwiches and a good variety of ice cream. You'll find a treat here or a lunch for everyone in your family. Stop in.

Mel's Mocha & Ice Cream is an example of why the California Delta is a jewel destination for all travelers. If you're tired of today's franchise restaurants, it's worth driving about 20 miles off the Interstate 5 Freeway to Walnut Grove, and have a sandwich and Gunther's ice cream at Mel's Mocha & Ice Cream. It's like a time machine back to the 1950s when there were more small family owned places like this establishment. It's a place where you can sit and read a newspaper, or the Delta Bay & Delta Yachtsman magazine, or sit outside and watch the boats go by on the Sacramento River. But my sin is eating their Gunther's coffee ice cream—which I think is the best in California. Warning: Single scoop is HUGE! This is just one example of many good Delta waterfront restaurants. And, if you're a boater, there is a public dock right in front of Mel's for short visits or overnight stays to enjoy walking around the small town where Japantown, built in 1916, is just s short walk down the hill from Mel's, and the Chinese town of Locke is only about one mile short hike.

I came here with my family in December of 2013.

The place is well-decorated and has a welcoming atmosphere. The girl working behind the counter provided friendly and efficient customer service.

We all had ice cream. It's really good! The kiddie size (the smallest) is probably enough to satisfy your cravings - it's pretty huge. The "small" size is already way too much ice cream.

Overall the ice cream is tasty, the service is delightful, and the atmosphere is clean and relaxed. Would definitely come here again!
