I love going to Washington to just get away from civilization. It's still an old west feel. Everyone there is so far removed from civilization that you see kids riding quad to town. Only vehicles on the road are ones that are not street legal. The hub of the town is the Washington hotel bar. We go out there for a 60.00 room you get just that...a very small room. 5 star hotel...this hotel does not know what a star is. But it is exactly how it would have been like back in the old west...that's the charm. The have a bar with great cocktails and beer and a place to bunk. If feels like your at a stage coach stop if you were riding cross country and were looking forward to such a stop. You definetly have to be in the right mind set and if you do a good time is guaranteed

Last summer visited Washington, California, Nevada County for the first time in nearly 30 years. Back in the early 80s when I lived there the Hotel was a rough-n-tumble affair owned by Dave and Diane. Many colorful characters called Washington home and the Hotel was the hub of activities. That was the era of Charlie Brown and Paula, Teepee Steve and Patty, Little Steve and Mama Su, Manor Dave, Jalapeño Hips, Tinkerbell, Snake and several retired Vietnam vets that served on the aircraft carrier the USS Coral Sea.
Back then it had a pleasant dilapidated feel - like going through a time warp back to the 1850s gold rush. Spent many a day swimming in the cool waters of the South Fork of the Yuba River and trying my hand at panning for gold.
On my return after a 30 year hiatus, had a couple of drinks at the bar, which had gotten a face-lift with old timey décor and steeped in Gold Rush era memorabilia. Planned on staying a couple of nights for nostalgia’s sake, checked out the quasi-refurbished rooms (quite spiffy) and then viewed the rates. Holy-moly, those rates were nearly 10 to 15 times what I paid way back when. Pondered if the walk down memory lane was worth it. Opted to break the budget and relive the past for one night.
With room prices from $65 to $180 per night, I have to reluctantly say the Washington Hotel done got duded up. A lot of memories there, a great place.

We spent one night in Room 7, which was over-priced at $90. The bathroom is across the hall, and the light was too dim to see much at all. The shower faucet was almost fallen off (my husband needed to repair it). Window didn't stay open (and no stick to prop it), cobwebs in bedroom and bathroom, coffee maker broken. And in spite of all this, a note in the room requested a tip for the maid! Needless to say, we didn't leave one. On the plus side, hotel is very quaint, with a great view of the river from the veranda. Staff are friendly (one showed us a binder of the hotel with old pictures), though 1-2 can be a bit crusty at first. Dinner and breakfast bit expensive, but OK, with very nice dinner waitress. Locals seem friendly. Town is tiny and cute and worth exploring.

Room Tip: If you want a quiet night, pick a room away from the saloon side. You may hear the owner walking ab...

We came here with our quads and friends to have a relaxing dinner after a 73 mile quad ride. The only thing that was good were the beer and drinks. We waited 45 minutes at a table after telling the owner that we wanted to eat dinner. She said that it would be a couple of minutes and they would come out and take our food order. I waited 30 minutes from that time and went in to remind her, she seemed annoyed that I reminded her that I wanted to eat at her restaurant. We waited another 15 minutes and then decided this was not worth the annoyance. I will never go back!! Be warned if you decide to venture into this small community, this is about the only place in town to eat, or at least wait to eat.

Room Tip: Did not stay here, but based on the service we received in the restaurant, good luck!!

We stayed in room 1 this time and loved it! The room was decorated in 1890's fashion and very comfortable.
The bar had great service and was fully stocked. The locals were all very friendly and we loved talking to Mama Su and Hank, the owners.
The cafe was unbelievable! the scampi and pasta I had was out of this world and served by the Town B***h (thats the way she introduced herself!). One of the most personable waitresses I have ever met. She was informative about the area and very funny, kept us in stitches all through the dinner. All in all the place is well worth a visit!

my first visit to washington and the "washington hotel" was in 1991 and the place was full of people and positively rockin'!! tourists and locals, kids and dogs...one big "family"...the cafe was reasonably priced and the food was excellent...the service was great, and definately worth the wait (it was packed on the weekends). however, my opinion of this same place in 2004...well, its lost most of its charm, the cafe is so overpriced the locals no longer eat there...there is a different energy around the town...(much of it seems negative), many old-timers have left the area...lots of new faces, but less smiles. I hope it will improve...or it will be a ghost town in the near future.

This Washington Hotel was built in 1857 & has been restored so well. We stayed in the suite, the only room with a bathroom. The South Fork of the Yuba river runs right behind the hotel so we could hear the water at night. Very relaxing place to get away. No cell phones, no traffic, no problems. The cafe serves great food and the bar is full of interesting locals. Washington Hotel offers a lot of history about the Gold Mining era and the scenery is awesome.
