Having misjudged the driving time from San Francisco, we arrived after 9pm, much later than we had said, and found the hotel closed down for the night and no bell. Nevertheless, we managed to raise Jeanne who welcomed us warmly. Room 7 isn't spacious, but it was very comfortable, cool and quiet. We stayed 3 nights. Using the $5 vouchers, we enjoyed hearty breakfasts 3 blocks away at The Nugget, where many locals eat. Unlike most visitors, our reason for staying in Weaverville was to hike. My wife and I made a half-day hike starting on the edge of town, following a route suggested in the leaflet on the Weaverville Basin Trail System, which Jeanne provided. We discovered that it is difficult to get very high in the Trinity Alps on a day hike, but we enjoyed the hike up to Boulder Lake and above the treeline, starting from the trailhead at the end of the forest road (dusty but passable with a family car) that begins off Hwy 3 just south of Coffee Creek.
