Before you can decide if this hotel is right for you, you'll need to be clear on what you are looking for. If you need a place for an extended stay that provides a full kitchen, dishwasher, pots, pans, silverware, air conditioning, cable TV, washing machine & dryer for laundry at a reasonable price. This is the place for you. There was no coffee machine. If on the other hand you are looking for a luxury hotel that adds to your LA experience with exceptional hospitality and ambience - this should only be your choice if you can't live for 2-3 days without the above appliances. Having just come from an incredible stay at the Simpson House in Santa Barbara, The Charlie paled in comparison. Upon arrival you instantly noticed why there are no images on The Charlie web-site of the outside. Dismal. The parking provided was half of a drive way, shared with another guest. There is inside parking through a security gate for guests that I assume were staying longer and in larger cottages. The housekeeper had not removed the garbage from underneath the sink so we were welcomed with an overwhelming smell of sour trash. The manager had the trash removed, apologized and brought us an airwick candle. With the removable of the trash, we hoped the fruit flies would go with it. We soon discovered that the source of the fruit flies was the garbage disposal that you needed to keep the stopper on. To remove it meant more fruit flies. It also became clear that some of the subtle sour aroma was coming from the disposal. With a heavy spray of Lysol air freshener and a clean up, the problem was fine for our 2 night stay. The bed linen was also on the worn side. Corner of sheet had a rip and hole, the embroidery on the comforter was fraying. Not luxury. The managers we encountered were polite and serviceable, like adult children who were letting rooms in their parents house extending themselves just enough. This is why it's important that you are clear with your expectations. This is not a luxury hotel. It's a key with no fob that you'd fine under the doormat of friends funky place he was letting you crash at for a few days. He doesn't do much landscaping, it's fraying around the edges but he has hundreds of TV stations and nice appliances. If that is what you are looking for - you will be thrilled and happy as can be with The Charlie. If this is a special vacation, where you stay matters because you want it to enhance your trip - think twice.

Charlie Chaplin, Marilyn Monroe, and Gloria Swanson are only a few of such legends to name, to whom at one point or another The Charlie grounds were believed to have been a home! In 2002, threatened by re-development, this historical landmark was acquired by Menachem Treivush and has since undergone a multi-million dollar renovation. By carefully preserving historically-scrutinizing details, incorporating the technology of today, and dedicating careful attention to detail, Mr. Treivush has rapidly built up The Charlie into the unique establishment that it is today!
