“Boho Shabby Chic”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 21 September 2013

Before you can decide if this hotel is right for you, you'll need to be clear on what you are looking for. If you need a place for an extended stay that provides a full kitchen, dishwasher, pots, pans, silverware, air conditioning, cable TV, washing machine & dryer for laundry at a reasonable price. This is the place for you. There was no coffee machine. If on the other hand you are looking for a luxury hotel that adds to your LA experience with exceptional hospitality and ambience - this should only be your choice if you can't live for 2-3 days without the above appliances. Having just come from an incredible stay at the Simpson House in Santa Barbara, The Charlie paled in comparison. Upon arrival you instantly noticed why there are no images on The Charlie web-site of the outside. Dismal. The parking provided was half of a drive way, shared with another guest. There is inside parking through a security gate for guests that I assume were staying longer and in larger cottages. The housekeeper had not removed the garbage from underneath the sink so we were welcomed with an overwhelming smell of sour trash. The manager had the trash removed, apologized and brought us an airwick candle. With the removable of the trash, we hoped the fruit flies would go with it. We soon discovered that the source of the fruit flies was the garbage disposal that you needed to keep the stopper on. To remove it meant more fruit flies. It also became clear that some of the subtle sour aroma was coming from the disposal. With a heavy spray of Lysol air freshener and a clean up, the problem was fine for our 2 night stay. The bed linen was also on the worn side. Corner of sheet had a rip and hole, the embroidery on the comforter was fraying. Not luxury. The managers we encountered were polite and serviceable, like adult children who were letting rooms in their parents house extending themselves just enough. This is why it's important that you are clear with your expectations. This is not a luxury hotel. It's a key with no fob that you'd fine under the doormat of friends funky place he was letting you crash at for a few days. He doesn't do much landscaping, it's fraying around the edges but he has hundreds of TV stations and nice appliances. If that is what you are looking for - you will be thrilled and happy as can be with The Charlie. If this is a special vacation, where you stay matters because you want it to enhance your trip - think twice.

Thank you for your review DESNY! I apologize that your stay with us was not to your liking.

We do provide coffee makers in our rooms. Should one be missing, we encourage guests to please contact the manager or a housekeeper onsite to request one. The parking on our property is very tight and we must make the most out of our space. We do not charge extra for parking, and the specific parking spot you mentioned above can fit a small/medium SUV, so we have never had complaints about this. Should a guest feel that the parking space is too small, street parking on Sweetzer is fine as well, and no permit is required. Left-behind trash by previous tenants is completely unacceptable, and we have gone through added rigorous training with our housekeeping to prevent this from ever happening. We were never informed of any fruit flies or holes in the sheets--we encourage our guests to please let us know immediately of any issues so we can resolve everything promptly!

We usually stay in larger hotels but tried The Charlie because we had an online voucher for a reduced rate, it's in a neighborhood we are familiar with and had historical charm. It was definitely cute and cozy and quiet, just like staying in grandma's cottage. We were in a room called the Sasha. In this unit, it is hard to walk past the king size bed to get to the bathroom - you have to scoot through about 6 inches of space. There are some things to know before you come.
The units have kitchens with refrigerator, stove, dishwasher, some plates, bowls, glasses, mugs, coffee maker, wine opener. The basics are all there. But pack your own: basket coffee filters, coffee, spices, paper towels, napkins, dishwasher soap or liquid. There's a Gelson's grocery store a few blocks up on Santa Monica Blvd which has a good selection of wine and cheese. Or have your personal assistant check in for you and stock the place in advance. I need to get a personal assistant.
Bring some beach towels for sitting on the outdoor furniture and give them a sweep off.
There is off street parking but bring your smallest car. It's hard to identify where to park and unload when you first get there, especially on a Friday afternoon. You may need the passenger to hop out, ring the bell on the gate to get checked in while the driver circulates the block.
Masha, manager/owner was on duty and was very nice. She was trying her best while dealing with some kind of situation with another guest sitting out on the curb with all belongings and a lot of drama.
This is a good spot for someone who wants to feel like they are staying in a home, not a hotel. There are a lot of nice neighbors walking dogs in the area.

We strive for consistency in regards to our bedding--all of our one-bedroom suites do come with California King-Sized Beds. We have found that guests staying in the Sasha suite do prefer the larger bed, despite it taking up more room in the bedroom. Should one prefer, both the living room and the outdoor patio provide ample seating space. The outdoor patio is very charming and is surrounded by trees. Although we do our best to wipe down the outdoor furniture prior to guests' arrival, we simply cannot prevent mother nature from taking its course--the leaves will keep falling and the breeze will keep blowing. We do have assigned parking spaces for all guests. Should a covered parking space be too tight for a vehicle, we will be more than happy to switch the parking spot to the opposite side, where larger vehicles have more parking flexibility. We do strive to be a home-away-from home to travelers, and we are joyful to hear that is how you felt throughout your staying with us!

The Charlie was a great convenient place to stay. The accommodation was perfect and has so much character. Surrounded by gardens you feel like you are not in the hustle and bustle of busy LA but in the country. Room was well equipped and was very comfortable. The manager "Masha" was very hospitable and welcoming. Overall a great experience.

Room Tip: Any room would be great. I did have a ground floor room and the noise from the room above was notice...

Thank you for your review Richard!

We are joyful to hear you've enjoyed your stay with us at The Charlie! The original buildings were built in 1924, and due to all-wood flooring in the suites, sound from footsteps does carry. We are, however, in the process of adding rug pads and thicker carpets to all upstairs suites, which we hope will aid with muffling the sound. We hope to see you in the future!

My family and I frequent Los Angeles often to visit friends and family. We have stayed in many of the cities amazing hotels, however it was during our most recent trip, recommended through a friend, that we came across The Charlie.

Intimate, chic and comfortable, The Charlie had everything we were looking for in a hotel, plus a few added bonuses that one can only get with such a property, which made this trip the best yet!

Immediately upon our arrival to The Charlie we were greeted by one of the hotels friendly staff members, Masha, who took us directly to our room without any of the non-sense we were previously accustomed to. Quick, easy and effortless. The check-out was no different!

Our beautiful 2-bedroom villa exceeded all of our expectations. Elegantly furnished with attention to detail, the Gloria created a pleasantly unique experience one does not simple find at "hotels" these days. With it's excellent decor, up to date kitchen, beautiful views and a sun deck, made it nearly impossible to leave. The hotel grounds were serene, with it's English style architecture and wonderful landscape, we found it hard to imagine that we were still in Los Angeles. The location made it easy to get around town and is located within minutes to some of the cities best restaurants.

We loved our entire experience with The Charlie and will be returning for many years to come!

Stayed at The Charlie and LOVED it!!! Everything was perfect; location, the room, the ambience...
Our plane got it late and we just e-mailed Masha, the supervisor, who let su know where to park and how to get into our room without having any trouble due to the time. Perfect for people who apreciate calm and quiet settings, and a more "at-home" feel to their vacations!

First the positives: Very clean, excellent location, wonderful ambiance. Negatives: Office closes at 5 p.m., so you need to get there to check in or you'll be out of luck. The WiFi didn't work. I asked them to fix it, but it still didn't work. Only the barest of toiletries provided - e.g., one bar of soap for the entire 4 day stay. The housekeeper left a dirty cleaning rag in the room. A coffee maker is provided, but you have to provide your own filters and coffee (come on now, even the Residence Inn provides coffee AND filters), and you need to bring your own paper towels -- although they do provide an empty towel holder. Also, privacy was an issue - as our room faced the street/pedestrians as well as housekeeping staff who frequently walked in front of the bungalow. Still, if you can overlook these negatives, and you are enthralled with being in the middle of West Hollywood and in the former home of the great Charlie Chaplin . . .

Room Tip: Try to get a room away from the street -- better privacy that way . . .

We are glad to hear you found your suite to be clean and found The Charlie's location to be excellent!!

Given that The Charlie is a family business, we have a very limited number of employees. Having said that, our main office does close at 5:00pm, but we do offer late check-in. If we are given enough notice, we will do our best to have a staff member greet you. We will also email guests self check-in instructions, which many have found to be very clear and simple! Along with the instructions, we will include one of our personal cellular phone numbers should the guest have any trouble locating or getting into their suite after hours.

Although we do not provide paper towels, we do provide kitchen towels, which are much more eco-friendly. In terms of our housekeeping staff, we have not only gone through added rigorous training with them to ensure the cleanliness of each room, but we have also ensured that in the future they mind the privacy of tenants.

We hope to exceed your expectations should you to choose The Charlie during your next trip to Los Angeles!

Charlie Chaplin, Marilyn Monroe, and Gloria Swanson are only a few of such legends to name, to whom at one point or another The Charlie grounds were believed to have been a home! In 2002, threatened by re-development, this historical landmark was acquired by Menachem Treivush and has since undergone a multi-million dollar renovation.
