I was very excited to stay at Montegufoni, but by what seems to be the luck of the draw, we got the smallest unit in the castle, il Camino. Others who used Groupon to book as we did, got much larger, 2 bedroom units with as we were, 2 guests staying.

The bed was very uncomfortable. They placed a wooden board with slats between the box spring and the mattress. It didn't help much, a new box set would help immensely. I know it's a 12th century building, but that is no excuse for holding onto a really old beyond repair bed set that had some kind of Asian motif which went along with a wall mounting at the head of the bed. Seeing how other units were equipped, there was no excuse for this bed even with it being part of the smallest unit. Mattress ticking (again an old mattress) scrapped my elbow raw turning at night.

Also, stop and buy/bring a roll of paper towels, dishwashing soap, and a bar of soap and bottle of shampoo. They provide a tiny bar of soap and 2 tiny containers of shampoo, good for only a day of use. Also, no hair dryer was provided, but the bathroom was very good.

The wifi worked well from the large reception room and exploring the castle and the surrounding grounds was fun and interesting.

We ate dinner at the castle 3 nights, twice outdoors, once indoors due to wetness . We thought the 4 course meal (25 euros each), bottle of wine (7 euros) and bottle of sparkling mineral water (2 euros) was a good value. One night, the first three courses featured wild boar, very delicious. Three other nights we ate in nearby Montespertoli, all good meals.

We drove to Lucca, Pisa, San Gimignano, Volterra. But for Florence, we took the bus from Baccaiano (nearby), buying bus tickets at the Tabacchi, and parking all day in a free lot down a side street.

We drove a 5 speed diesel 4 door Fiat, part of the Groupon deal, and driving stick was very useful for all the up the mountain down the mountain S curves going from one place to another once you were off the autostradas.

Room Tip: By the luck of the draw, we got what was probably the smallest unit in the castle, il Camino.

A holiday in a caste, it sounds great. But, the times have changed. When people slept in castles, there were no heatings, no badrooms. And this is a castle. So, no heating, 1 set of sheets, poor beds (really!), musquitos, bugs, etc. The castle is beautiful to watch, but better sleep in a hotel. Because, this is really not a hotel. It is cold (although outside it is warm), moist, and the rooms are to big. To big you think? Yes, because there is no heating, you have to walk from your bed down the stairs on the cold stone floor to the small bathroom. There is a fireplace, but you may not use it.
It is a wonderful castle to see, but drive along and find yourself a hotel.

Montegufoni dates back to the 13th century and has been converted to self-catering vacation apartments, meaning maid service and daily linens are not included. The rooms are huge and what you would expect a medieval castle to look like. Plus each apartment is equipped with a stove and refrigerator, dishes, etc. so that you can prepare meals there if you prefer. There is a bar and restaurant on site with a set menu each day and a good value. In addition, there are several good restaurants in the neighboring villages. The grounds of the castle are beautiful. There is a lemon tree grove, wisteria arbor, various flower gardens, a pool, grotto, with everything well manicured. The castle has many areas to explore. Wifi is available on the lobby balcony, in the lobby, and at the outside dining area. The castle's location is perfect for touring Tuscany or going further out with many beautiful hill towns within a 2 hour drive. This is wine country with lots of vintners offering tastings in breath taking locations. Arrangements can also be made to take a horse drawn wagon to the wine trail! The staff was very helpful with lists of places to see and things to do. We received a parking ticket, which the staff helped sort out for us. Without a doubt, this was memorable place to which I would love to return.

Room Tip: Rooms overlooking the garden are spectacular, and the staff is very helpful with trying to meet requ...

The hotel was terrrific and a perfect location for touring Tuscany. The views were spectacular.
The restaurant and restaurant staff were very accommodating. Remember that it is not a hotel so there is not daily maid service but the views and the castle were worth it. The rooms were very big with a kitchen and refrig.

Forget the poor reviews regarding the castle...those people don't deserve such a special place. This was my third stay in the castle (the last was 9 years ago) and it is still my favourite place. If you are looking for a modern luxury base then this is not it. There is no elevator for example...it is a genuine medieval castle that I feel privileged to have spent some special family holidays in. If you can, stay in the "Galleria"...you have your own ballroom (!!!!) and a room filled with frescos by Severini. Bloody brilliant!!!

We recently stayed here for three nights in July. This castle/manor is a beautiful place to stay with absolute character and charm, great gardens and pool area, is quite acceptable/cool at night even in the height of summer due to its elevation. The staff and owners were wonderful and friendly and went out of their way to make people happy. Remember this is an ancient building so don't expect the Hilton but do expect beauty, history, very comfortable rooms/apartments, peace and quiet and more. We will definately stay here again and is a great base for a Tuscany stay with or without a family. Having its own little bar and restaurant was a blessing after a long day sightseeing and then lounging by the pool just made it better. Free wifi in the main hall and very helpful and informative english speaking hosts with lots of ideas and literature on things to do. You won't regret it. Courtyard noise was minimal and didn't bother us, but if you want complete solitude consider room location in castle, staff will advise you.

Room Tip: Check their website as every room is different. Take some food and beverages/coffee/tea etc and bott...

For a week at the end of April, Castello di Montegufoni was our base for exploring the Tuscan countryside and small walled villages plus Florence. We found it delightful! We love history and to be able to reside in this magnificent castle in an apartment was perfect for us. Each apartment is different, but all are appointed with everything one needs for comfort and cooking. Ours was two levels with an old stone spiral staircase connecting the huge bedroom with balcony and views to the lower sitting room and kitchen area. In the middle of the spiral staircase, access to the bathroom with gunnels for windows was charming! Outside our kitchen area was another sitting area very private in the lower gardens, but not far from the amazing grotto! Around every corner of the grounds was something new to admire, and we so enjoyed our sunset cocktails with new friends on the huge balcony adjacent to the main sculptured garden on the main level! The bougainvillea archway on that level was gorgeous and just starting to come in full bloom while we were there!

The staff was most friendly and helpful and the groundskeeper a delightful man. We explored a lot of the countryside and Tuscan towns but one day chose just to stay at the castle taking walks and relaxing there. The small towns nearby have fresh produce and very friendly people too. If you like to be away from the city but within driving or bus connection, this castle is ideal. It was a most memorable week partly because we were staying in the castle. The only difficulty we had was finding it in our rental car from Rome airport. Even our GPS was confused. However, after programming in the castle as home, we always found our way back after days of exploration. We highly recommend Castello di Montegufoni with great memories!
