“Bucket list meal...”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 2 June 2014 via mobile

If you are a foodie this restaurant is a must not miss. The service, the food, the atmosphere and the restaurant itself are some of the finer things in life. Every person working in this establishment either loves what they do on a nightly basis or are better actors than any others! Dessert was five courses, the wine pairings were done with restraint to fit our requested budget but were so excellent you would have never known budgets were considered. Thank you to everyone at French Laundry for fulfilling six foodies dreams!

“Once and done due to excess”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 May 2014

We enjoy dining out and have had wonderful experiences. Thanks to our concierge we had late Friday night dinner reservations at the French Laundry. Excellent. We were received and lead to our table on the main floor. Our host brought menus and briefly chatted. We felt comfortable.

Until asking for help with our wine selections. We enjoy wine and we expressly came to this part of California to taste and learn what could be done here. We were dismissed when we chose to limit our selection to local wines. It was painful to make a selection despite the introduction of technology all you provide or all we found were lists by region and varietal and prices. No notes from you, nor the producer, nothing. And your attitude. This is why my husband doesn't engage sommeliers. The wine experience was the worst part of our evening.

Back to the nicer people who took care of us.

Two upgrades - my husband tells the story of the dinner he paid $100 not to eat beets and the wonderful beef. Dishes were beautiful and generous to fault. Then five dessert courses? I could not even taste at this point. I was uncomfortable. One or two truly exceptional bites would have been perfect. Thankfully a couple of things were packaged up.

At some point our host stopped spending time at our table to service an even later table. It felt like were were abandoned. Dismissed and now abandoned.

Thank you to the professionals who grew these beautiful foods for us and to the talented staff who turned them into a tasty visual delight. Apologies to the pastry team I couldn't do you justice.

I wanted to think TFL would be a place that I would want to go back to celebrate another occasion, but the current version is a one time event.

“Food Coma”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 May 2014

The experience was amazing and the food was fabulous. I felt lucky just to be able to have the opportunity to eat here. Anytime you eat somewhere so famous and expensive you feel a little self concious but the staff did what they could to put us at ease. Would I go again? Yes, IF someone else was paying. Hard to justify spending that much money on food even if it is some of the best I have ever had. Maybe if you are okay with the sticker shock you would do it again but for me it is marked off the bucket list.

“French Laundry disappoints”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 May 2014

As expected the French Laundry offered great ambiance, well trained attendants and a great presentation of the several courses. Service was extremely attentive but fell significantly as the restaurant got busier and we lost the personal touch from our hostess who then gave 98% of her attention to the adjacent tables and we were left alone. As the afternoon came to a close thee appeared to be a definite lack of spirit and attentiveness. Many of the courses were exceptional, however some were either too large portions or lacklustre - given the volume of food, offering several dessert courses seemed an overkill and took away from the gastronomic experience. Atmosphere was great but Alinea in Chicago was a far superior experience.
