“Great seafood, made to order, eaten outdoors minutes later!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 21 August 2011

My partner and I, after a great day of biking on Frying Pan Road in Basalt, decided to try the Seafood Shack for dinner, rather than one of the established restaurants in town. The Shack sits in the center of town, just steps from a liquor store, where we bought beer to go along with our meal of jumbo shrimp, crab cake, a boiled Maine Lobster, and a lobster roll. There are picnic tables and chairs set up right next to the Shack, and an informal, festive atmosphere among all those either eating there, or ordering their food to go. I went up to the counter and placed my order, paid for it, then waited for about ten minutes for everything to be cooked to order - just enough time to go to the liquor store. When everything was ready, my name was called, and I went back to the counter to pick up my order, simply served on paper plates, with a plastic spoon, and napkins. The boiled one and one half pound lobster we enjoyed had just come out of the pot it was cooked in, and was absolutely fresh and delicious, if a bit messy to eat. Same with the fresh lobster roll - just chilled pieces of lobster, celery, and a bit of mayo - nothing more! The shrimp were also a standout - they were pan fried with no breading, just a bit of oil and salt - superb! This is a fun place to go and relax outdoors, enjoy the setting sun in lovely downtown Basalt, and eat some great seafood as well! Our cost, not including the beer we bought separately, was about $40 per person.

“This place is a diamond in the rough!!”

If you are EVER in Basalt or passing through don't overlook Butche's Seafood Shack, which is located in the corner gas station parking lot. You can order your food, either a small, medium or large lobster which is cooked fresh right there and then sit at one of the surrounding outdoor picnic tables. Butch makes the most amazing lobster bisque - it's to die for. The atmosphere was so much fun with one of Basalt's local residents playing music there and he was quite enjoyable. There is a liquor store next to the gas station and you are allowed to go get a cold beer or a bottle of wine and open it right there to have with your meal. We actually sat for some time on a tree trunk just enjoying our wine and talking with Butch. He's such a great guy with a great place that I wanted to make sure to get the word out as there was nothing about it on trip advisor until now. Another wonderful thing about this place is "Ray's Pies". Ray is a local guy who makes the most delicious pie and sells it by the slice at Butche's. The local atmosphere here made our visit to Basalt something to remember and we'll definately be going back to visit Butche's Seafood Shack :)
