We stayed here in mid September for what was to be a nice 3 day weekend getaway. My wife and I come to Beaver Creek frequently and have stayed at numerous properties in and around the village during our visits. On the reservation we requested a king bed, but upon entering our room, we were given a cramped room with 2 queen beds. After returning to the front desk, we were given a different room which we were told was one of their nicest rooms. After navigating the maze between all their different buildings, we get to our room only to find neither of the keys work. We trekked back to the front desk and eventually after 30+ minutes of room shuffling we got into our room. For some reason the housekeepers love to completely close all the curtains (they did this every time they cleaned the room), including the blackout curtains, so the room was pitch-dark and difficult to find a light switch. In retrospect I believe the reason they did this was to delay the inevitable horror of discovering what the room actually looks like. Our room looked like a typical hotel room until you entered the bedroom. Mounted on the headboard was some medieval shield with two swords making an X across it and a fire-breathing wolf in the middle. The headboard continued upwards to the ceiling where it formed a dome structure that was attached to the ceiling with drapery extending down all the way to the floor. The dome structure itself had a mirror on its lowered ceiling so you could watch yourself in bed next to the medieval shield and fire-breathing wolf. There was even a picture of the Travelocity Roaming Gnome sitting on the bed in the room’s guestbook. After reminding myself that we are staying in Beaver Creek and not the Cliffbreaker’s in Rockford, IL, I just can’t figure out what style or theme they are trying to capture here.
The property is older and certainly dated and is spread out across seven buildings and it nearly requires the guidance of a Sherpa to navigate the maze to get from one end of the property to the other as we had to do. If you plan on heading into the village, it is 1/3 of a mile walk to get to there, including having to go up many stairs. Inside The Charter all the elevators we took had some sort of smell to them that my wife and I just could not pin down what that came from. It wasn’t necessarily a musty smell, but it wasn’t exactly fresh either. Maybe it’s the air freshener they use, but the elevators certainly had a smell to them. The staff was nice and friendly, but one of my biggest complaints was not being able to check our mountain bikes with the bellman. I was told by the bellman that I could either place the bikes on a bike rack in the parking garage or take them up to the room. My one bike lock wasn’t long enough to lock both bikes to the rack, so we had to take the bikes with us into the room to keep them secure. With two bikes in our room it became extremely cluttered and hard to move about. I have never stayed at a property in the Beaver Creek Village that did not have a valet service for your bicycles. It is a very basic service to have during the summer season and a definite shortcoming of this property. On the positive side the pool area was very nice and has been updated more recently. It is very good size and has both indoor and outdoor pools and hot tubs. The food we had at the Black Diamond Bistro was also good, however one of the large chandeliers hanging overhead kept flicking on and off rapidly throughout our dinner and was extremely annoying.
While The Charter is certainly a serviceable property to stay at, it falls well short of the standard that most other properties in Beaver Creek achieve. In fact it has by far been my worst overall experience of any property in Beaver Creek or Avon and I have stayed at over 15 different properties thus far. I work in the travel industry and I stay at hotels all over North America about 150 nights a year. With all my time traveling and living in hotels, I have a pretty good sense of what is to be expected when I’m staying away from home. Beaver Creek’s motto is “Not exactly roughing it,” and it is built on the foundation of being an upscale, posh four season resort that is situated inside a gated community. Though the friendliness of the staff and the pool area were fantastic, the overall service was below average since they did not read the notes to put us in a king bed and nobody ever greeted us upon check in or offered help with our bags until after we had fully unloaded the car and had all of our belongings inside. Overall The Charter falls well short of achieving what you can easily find at other properties in Beaver Creek, especially at the same summer or fall price point. The Charter needs to find a common identity to its rooms and then execute a complete renovation to match this identity. Until that time it suffers from outdated and mismatched décor that does nothing to please the senses. Compounding this is the complete lack of a valet service for our mountain bikes and some mechanical and maintenance annoyances that need to be addressed. In the upscale Beaver Creek village, The Charter doesn’t live up to the high standard that so many other properties in Beaver Creek achieve day in and day out. Save yourself the headache and stay elsewhere.
