“A trip back in time at a true Aussie pub so close to the big smoke!”
Reviewed 22 February 2014

This is a lovely Aussie pub. The staff are fair dinkum and friendly. The meals are large and taste great. I had corned beef with mash, mustard gravy and veggies - it was delicious and so big I had to take half of it home in a takeaway container. My friend had the chicken parma and thought it was excellent ... must have been good because it was devoured promptly. I can hardly wait to go back.
This is the pub used for the Aussie television show "The Sullivans".

“An old favourite”
Reviewed 22 September 2013

I have not been there for ages but stepping back into The Retreat is like going home, friendly, comfortable and warm. Kim and Bruce have been our hosts for 20 years and I think that is why I love the place so much. They are both incredibly committed to ensuring you have a great time every time - even if it is simply calling in for a beer or a glass of wine or enjoying a meal. The Corned Beef is the best in Melbourne and pretty much have it every single time. A quiet meal in The Snug is perfect if you do not like huge crowds. Any wonder why for so many years The Australian Icon The Sullivans enjoyed so many TV Hours in that very same place.

“Average meals and grumpy service :(((((”
Reviewed 12 May 2013

We decided to try this hotel and were quite disapponted. Meals were okay but pretty pricey for what you got. We saw this place in the entertainment book so thought we would give it a go...What really annoyed us was when we went to pay the bill (Probably due to having a voucher?) he charged us $15 for x 2 lemon lime and bitters - Soft Drink Only!. I almost fell over in shock!!!!!
We ordered scooners but were charged $7.50 each glass... Now this is a complete joke. I do get that alot of places make there money in drinks but hey this is postmix, some syrup and 3 or 4 drops of bitters... Naturally I questioned the amount on bill and the man serving in main bar was rude, short and totally disinterested in my reaction. I guess he would be the owner. Maybe he was annoyed that we used a vouchers so charged us more for drinks? (They shouldnt put out vouchers when they treat you like this) I will never go back here just due to how we were ripped off and treated by staff there. Food was ok but expensive for a hotel. Inside is very dark and gloomy in seating area. Very small and pokey. Quite setting and hardly anyone there (No wonder why) Dont waiste your time with service like this..There are over 500 other hotels/pubs in Melbourne. Choose any other one. e have gone to 100's of hotels for meals and never had service and attitude like this. Not worth it !!!

“Comfort food in old world charm”
Reviewed 11 April 2013

Dined here recently on a cold night. and enjoyed an old fashioned meal in a very comfortable atmosphere.
The menu is not extensive but they all sounded great.
We opted for corned beef with mustard sauce and mash with vegetables, this was stunning. The meat was tender and it was as if it had been cooked at home.
There were several groups there but it was quiet and all the little nik naks they had around took you back in time . This is an old fashioned pub with plenty of style and a place to go when you want a good meal. It was not expensive and the staff were capable and knew what we were after.
We did not book but were made welcome and had a great meal. we will go back for another meal as all menu items looked great. Try this one, you will not be disappointed.
