“Disappointing”
Reviewed 29 August 2013

This Inn was disappointing enough to me that we found another place to stay after the first night. It should be charming but it falls short. The house is lovely but needs more care. There is junk stored on a section of the porch, the room smelled kind of dank to me, and the addition of spa tubs in the rooms (from years ago) was a mistake in my opinion as they take away from the asthetic appeal of the rooms. The traffic noise was loud and relentless until very late at night. There is a nice balcony and a nice sitting room on the second floor and some nice furnishings. The young lady who checked us in was very sweet and proffesional. The owners live in the house and their dog came running down the length of the porch snarling at me. I had to put my bicycle between us. I love dogs, and I didn't even bother to tell the owners. But, I thought it was crazy to have that happen. Overall I just wish I hadn't wasted any of my vacation time at this place.

We stayed for 3 nights and I have mixed feelings about our stay. First, the positives: We arrived well before check-in and were accommodated by the effervescent Maddy (Maddie?) who gave a quick tour of the lodge and to our room.
The beds were comfy and our room was in the back, second level and quiet. As another reviewer noted, though the inn is situated on a busy road, we still had the sense we were tucked away somewhere cozy, with the hummingbirds entertaining us. A steady supply of homemade cookies, juice, coffee and tea were available downstairs.
The bathroom is probably grounds to have our room (The Crissman) temporarily closed for repairs...there were rows of floor tiles missing, peeling and jutting off the floor by the shower - no tub -(covered up by 2 small hand towels). Additionally, the way the rooms were described on the website are misleading as it doesn't specify only some rooms (or none??) have a mini fridge, jetted tub (our room had neither) and there was certainly no sign of the "spa" alluded to in the information provided by the website. Since none of these amenities were of interest to us, we didn't care but I imagine a couple looking for a romantic w/e away would be upset. Perhaps there are still rooms with these perks available and can be requested upon reservation...I don't know.
There is a nice outdoor patio as well as the dining room where you can have breakfast which is served downstairs daily from 8-9:30 a.m. (so for us bed lovers, a long sleep-in was a no-go!). The food is a set menu and a bit inconsistent in freshness & quality...sometimes very good & sometimes seemed more than day-old and microwaved.
I explored the property outside and it is screaming for attention as it was hard to tell if projects were just starting up, abandoned mid-project or what....piles of bricks and general detritus all over the place, a fountain and outdoor garden pond that had water in them but weren't running etc.
The general vibe of the place was relaxed but very, very tired. It feels like the Alps had been a great success years ago, efforts were made to expand and then someone, or their funds, ran out of steam.
We were not sorry to have stayed here but there are so many ways this place could improve and be a truly amazing spot.
2 other quick notes: The driveway comes up on the road in a hurry, with no signage whatsoever and we drove past it, having to enter via the exit. There is also an ancient, lovable old dog living on the premises with free roaming privileges so if you have a fear of, or allergy to, dogs, or object to them in the dining room, you may want to consider this.

Room Tip: If you're looking for spa-like amenities in your room, you're best to specify this from the...

While situated on a busy canyon road, once you step it--it is blissfully quiet. Our room in the back was large, comfy and also very quiet--made for a good night's sleep. Breakfast was good--excellent coffee and the quiche was wonderful.

Room Tip: ask for a room in the back

We have stayed at this quaint Inn in Boulder Canyon a few times. Our last stay was very disappointing. We were upgraded to a different room because the jetted tub in the room we rented didn't work. Great!, except that the tub in the 2nd room did not work either. The carpet was torn and stained. Two of the lights wouldn't light. The shower was moldy and the were stains from a water leak on the ceiling. This Inn has so much going for it, a great location, interesting history, great staff. It is just really showing it's age and neglect.

The reviews for Alps Canyon Inn must be bogus !!!

My husband and I booked 3 nights (July 19-21, 2013) at The Alps Boulder Canyon Inn and checked out after staying only one night and that was a long night !! We got a really hard time from Maggie when we were checking out. She said they were not able to reimburse us for the other 2 nights because it was their busy season. We said the room was not suitable for us and we do not want to argue. She said she would take care of the refund later because she was working the kitchen (making their so called delicious breakfast) and the front desk, she did not have time to do the refund at this time. I told her we could wait because we were not leaving until the refund was on our credit card. After being duped with their bragging comments about their Inn on their website, I did not trust Maggie to honor her words about putting the refund on our credit card. The refund was put on our credit card, after some arguing.

Comments about this illusory“award winning” Inn:

Customer service was poor. The City of Boulder had a problem with their water, which affected the Alps Inn (cold water was very brown). I called down to the front desk and talked to John about the problem. He said he would call the city and call me back. He said the problem should be fixed in an hour. I asked if there was any drinking water available and said I am not sure if there is bottled water. He sent Maggie up to our room with “one” bottle of drinking water. The water was still brown in the morning, and there was a tiny piece of paper taped to all the doors, claiming the water was still drinkable and able to shower/bath ! They did not offer anyone bottled water, poor customer service on their part. I wonder how many guests were drinking the brown water?

The bed was very uncomfortable with scratchy, itchy bedding. The 600 count Egyptian sheets they bragged about on their website were not on our bed.

The Godiva chocolates mentioned on the website did not show up in our room.

The owners of this place play it up on their website how wonderful and luxurious their B&B, and truth be told it is not better than a Motel 6. The furniture is run down, the cleaning was intolerable, junk all over the place and many repairs are needed.

This B & B is not even close to a luxury B & B and the money they charge is outrageous !! We stayed in the Magnolia room (advertise as $235 and they charged us $188 because the jets in the tub were broken). This room was not even worth $80 a night. It was not cleaned properly, a curtain rod was drooping, part of a towel rack needed repaired, the shower was dirty, the bed was very itchy and uncomfortable, the carpet had spots on it, the air conditioner was loud, the furniture on the small balcony was a log bench, lots of noise coming from the road. I really could go on and on about this place.

You will not see us going back !! As far as we are concerned the owners lack integrity for portraying their Inn to be something it is not and to charging outrageous rates !!!!

We discovered Alps Boulder Canyon Inn on our second anniversary while visiting the Rocky Mountain National Park in 1992. They had just opened and we have always made this a special part of our annual trip back to Boulder and Estes Park. We have enjoyed our stay in all four seasons and tell all our friends about the most relaxing place to get away from the daily grind. Some describe the Alps as rustic but we like to say it's elegant. Our favorite place to relax is in front of the huge rock moss fireplace downstairs (see photo) but also enjoy the variety of other places to lounge inside and out. The choice of music they have selected to play lightly in the background (which you can enjoy from the room if you choose) makes us feel like we have taken a trip into the past. The scones and frittata or Belgian waffles for breakfast have always been a delight. Thank you John and Jeannine for your hospitality and for building a dream house!

Room Tip: If you are a light sleeper, the rooms on the back are isolated from the traffic on Canyon Drive but...

Wanted to stay at this B&B, booked a room with a Credit Card over the phone. No terms were discussed during this time. Had to cancel 3 weeks in advance due to a business trip that came up. Janine the owner states that it is our policy to charge $25 to cover our merchant transaction fee. Not sure when I authorized a transaction for services not rendered. I have heard of putting holds on cards but never a charge. Janine is very rude and not very customer friendly. Terrible experience
