“Might Choose Another Hotel Next Time”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 December 2011

This was my first time and Breck and, let me begin by saying, the Mountain Thunder has an awesome staff. They all seemed very knowledgable about the hotel/area and most of the employees went out of their way to help. The property itself was nice, but I think I might stay somewhere else next time I'm in Breckenridge based on a few things that happened during my stay. First, right after my friend and I checked in, we took our stuff and proceeded to go up to our condo. Upon getting to the room, we found a couple of people in the room who were staying there through the weekend. This was not only embarassing for us, but I'm sure also for the people in the room. I thought, OK, no big deal... mistakes happen and called the front desk. They were prompt about sending someone with keys to a different unit, but the delay caused my friend to be late (not just a little) for his skiing lesson.

Second, although the hotel prides itself on being "across the street from the gondola to Peak 8" with "ski in" access, the walking time/effort to the gondola from the hotel is quite significant. You have to walk behind a building, down some stairs, through the tunnel, up a few more stairs and then across a large parking lot. This is a particularly daunting task while wearing ski boots and carrying skis. Also, we were there in mid December during the Dew Tour and we learned, only upon check-in, that the ski in access was not yet open because it was early in the season. No one notified us of this when we made our reservation.

One day we decided to go back to the condo for lunch instead of staying on the mountain. We figured the free shuttel could pick us up by the gondola and take us back to the hotel so we wouldn't have to walk with our ski gear and skis. I promptly called for the shuttle and was told it would be right there. It wasn't. Two phone calls later and 45 minutes later the shuttle picked us up. Needless to say, I was not happy about wasting 45 minutes from a long weekend for which a paid a lot of money.

Third, the room service was not the best. We were there for three nights and our coffee was never restocked and salt from the entryway was never cleaned up.

After I was back home, I received a survey form via email from the hotel. I filled it out and listed all of my concerns listed above and I didn't hear back. I do not consider myself a demanding traveler, but I would expect a hotel of this caliber to operate a little better than what I experienced.

After reading reviews on the different lodging options in the area, my wife and I found a great deal for the Mountain Thunder Lodge. This was our first visit to the Breckenridge area. Quite simply, we were blown away.

From the front desk, to the shuttle drivers, to the rooms... everything exceeded our expectations. Being that this was our first time to the area, we had a lot of questions for the front desk and they took the time to answer them all or make arrangements for us. There was never a shortage of shuttles and I don't think that we ever waited for longer than 2 minutes from the resort and about 5 minutes for a pick up in town.

Our room was in the main lodge and contained everything we could have possibly needed. We were surprised to find a full kitchen in our one bedroom condo. It was just a short walk (or shuttle drive) to both the liquor store and the grocery store. The room was so quiet and it felt like we were in our own world.

More perks: The lodge has free ski lockers so you don't have to bring up your wet skis or boards up to the room. In room coffee is Starbucks... yum. Bed was super comfortable. Not too hard and not too soft. Blueray dvd player in the living room. We spent one apres-ski night simply lounging on the sofa, resting our sore muscles and watching a movie we'd picked up from the redbox in the grocery across the street. Hot tub.. We only took advantage of the hot tub off of the main lodge, but the tub and tub area were clean. Plenty of towels were available.

The lodge is situated just across the street from the Gondola for Peak 8. It's a very quick shuttle ride or if you prefer there is a tunnel that goes under the road if you want to walk there. We walked back from the Gondola on the first day. It's not far, but after skiing all day walking in your boots isn't exactly comfortable. The Gondola itself is completely free and will take you up to the new lodge (mostly timeshares) on Peak 7, and then all the way up to the base at Peak 8.

We just got home and can't wait to go back!

My fourth ski trip in total, first in Colorado. Sorry Alps, you've lost a customer. Loved Breckenridge and loved the accommodation. The property is very easy to find and only 5 minutes walk to Main Street.
The staff were very friendly and helpful. The room exceeded anything you can get in the Alps for twice the price we paid. Big accommodation, very nicely decorated and very quiet at night. Huge TV and lovely fire in the room. Shuttle service was great for getting to and from the peak bases in the morning and too and from the restaurants and bars at night.

The hotel was a 2 min shuttle ride/7 min walk from the gondola. Getting to the main restaurants and shops was about a 15-20 min walk. Rooms are clean, normal amenities (humidifier a plus!), kitchen stocked with usual dishware and appliances in great condition. Comfortable, though not memorably decorated. Staff is genuinely friendly and helpful (as were most people we met in town), especially the ladies. Our room was in the main building and that proved very convenient as well. Didn't get much noise from the street at all. Hot tub was superb- clean and hot and not usually crowded. Gym looked ok but we didn't use it.

Why not 5 stars? It was more expensive than our Aspen apartment, which was a little nicer. Also the coffee offered in the lobby area was never available, and there is no restaurant. The apartment decor could be a little nicer/homier and for the #1 hotel in Breck it could have some special touches like a welcome snack or bottle of wine in the rooms.

Would stay again, would recommend.

Room Tip: Corner rooms are larger, look at the map to pick a room close to the hot tubs. The hot tub in the m...

We stayed at the Mountain Thunder Lodge while visiting Breck during the Dew Tour weekend (Mid Dec).

The town was packed and very busy so we were thankful for the MTL's great location. It is located in town but in a secluded, wooded area so we never had any concerns with noise. The property is located across the street from the Gondola and even has an underground tunnel so you don't have to worry about crossing the busy street. At the end of the day, you can ski down a trail that ends right at the property.

You can walk pretty much everywhere in town but they also offer a great shuttle. The front desk staff and the drivers were in constant contact and provided excellent service. The entire staff was extremely friendly and very knowledgeable.

The property and rooms were very well kept and very comfortable. Our kitchen was well equipped and very clean. Parking was clean, well lit and very convenient.

Our kids loved the outdoor pool as it was a perfect temperature for them.

We will be back soon!! Thanks for the great stay.

We traveled to Mountain Thunder Lodge in December 2011, and chose to stay there based on the overwhelmingly positive reviews that were posted here on Trip Advisor. Needless to say, we were NOT disappointed at all, and would continue to make MTL our #1, hands-down choice for lodging when we return to Breckenridge again. It is a beautiful facility and provides guests with accommodations that are idyllic of a Colorado mountain town. A few things to note about the property:

LOCATION:
LOCATION. LOCATION. LOCATION. MTL has the BEST location in Breckenridge. It is an easy, short walk to Main Street, yet has a fantastic location right at the foot of the mountains, with amazing mountain views.

PARKING:
Parking at MTL is phenomenal and VERY convenient and well thought out - - it is an underground garage underneath the buildings, that is heated and well-secured, with access for guests only (with key-card). Parking is ample both inside and out.

AMENITIES:
While we did not use all of the amenities at MTL (and I'm sure there were more that we were unaware of....), I can say that the ones we did use were outstanding. There was a very nice, heated pool and multiple hot tubs right outside of our room (open 8am-10pm and accessible with your room key card). There was a workout facility (we did not use it). The lobby is very nice, and the staff members are VERY helpful.

ROOM:
The room was a very clean one bedroom unit with a full kitchen, full-size appliances (including fridge, electric oven, stove, dishwasher, microwave), and had a separate living room area, dining area, and lovely balcony overlooking the pool. The room was very spacious and well-appointed with nice and tasteful, lodgy-feeling decor. The king sized bed was very comfortable, and there was also a queen sleeper sofa in the living room. Towels and daily maid service are provided, as are soap, toiletries, toilet paper, paper towels, dishwashing detergent, utensils, plates, etc. etc.

This is the second time we've stayed here. First was in a condo in the main building. This time, we had a two bedroom townhome with heated garage for our car. Love this hotel. While it doesn't have restaurant or spa, it's so close to town that you can either walk or take the free shuttle around town.

The room was great. Vaulted ceilings, fireplace, back yard with seating and grill. Kitched is fully stocked. Just go shopping for food and your all set.

Bedrooms are great. Both had large flat screen tv's on wall. Humidifiers in each room. Very nice beds. Only reason why I gave sleep quality average is because they only carry feather pillows which where old and worn. Needs to be replaced and bring in foam pillows. But we worked it out. Bathrooms are nicely stocked. Wood and slate all over.

Living room was nice. Fireplace really heated up the place for those single digit nights.

Service is always wonderful at Mountain Thunder. Front desk is nice and helpful. Each day, we had housekeeping clean our unit including dishes. Didn't have to lift a finger. The shuttle service is free. Just bring some tip money. They will take you all over Breck and pick you up with a phone call. Door to door service.

We love this place because you can ski right to your unit and the gondola is right arross the street to take you up. With that, you are still close to down town. Just a couple blocks from main street. We get the best of both worlds. The mountains and the town.

When we are in Breck, this is where we stay. Love it.

Room Tip: Ask for a room close to the pools or hot tubs so you don't have to walk far when it's cold.
