“Lovely spot, terrible food”
Reviewed 13 April 2012

This hotel is in a beautiful setting, and you can walk to part of the stunning, azure, Rio Celeste, and take a dip in the waterfall pools. It is quite remote.
Rooms are beautiful and tastefully decorated with private patios-ours looked into the forest, and a perfect outdoor shower.
The gardens are gorgeous and full of birds, including a green parrot that comes for banana at breakfast every day and a white rabbit that is apparently a hotel pet (I don’t know how long he will avoid the numerous hawks and vultures!) and a pool of enormous Koi. There is a nice swimming pool with hot tubs. The pool bar was closed while we were there.
Another reviewer mentioned the damp, and yes, rooms and the main hotel get damp over night-to the extent that there was a frog lurking in the computer in the main lodge when my husband opened it! However it is in a rain forest! The clue is in the name. Most places we stayed in Costa Rica which were in or abutting the rain forest were damp, more or less so depending on humidity levels.
Staff were very helpful and friendly.
The only problem here was the food which was expensive and so bad that we went without dinner the second night rather than experience it again.
Even pasta in tomato sauce was a disaster!
The included breakfast, was to be fair, fine.
I would recommend this hotel, but suggest that if you have transport, you go elsewhere for dinner.

Thank you for your comments. We are happy to hear you enjoyed the beautiful surroundings of Rio Celeste Hideaway. We are however sorry to hear about your distaste for the food. Since your stay, and as a result of honest guest feedback such as yours, we have replaced the Executive Chef and brought in a new Sous Chef as well to elevate the quality and experience in our restaurant.

If your travels bring you back to Costa Rica, we hope you will stay with us again and experience our new culinary offerings.

Rio Celeste is 16 km away from the main tourist areas of Costa Rica and nestled right next to a National Park. It truly is breathtaking to behold and no expense was spared in making it a luxury resort. The rooms are extremely large with jacuzzi tubs and outdoor showers. The staff is very friendly and all our tours were just the tour guide and us (me & my friend) - which made them really relaxed and personalized. I cannot say enough good things about Rio Celeste!

A word of warning: schedule transportation to Rio Celeste or rent a SUV to get there. The roads to Rio Celeste are rough - but I promise the journey will be worth it!

Room Tip: They are all amazing!!

The reviews are right, this place is off the beaten path, but so worth the travel. We hired a driver for this leg of the trip and that proved to be a smart choice as the roads to get there are extremely bumpy and it could be easy to get lost without GPS. Once we arrive at this hotel, we knew we had made the right choice in picking this property to start our honeymoon.

The staff is extremely attentative and respond quickly to requests. The food was good and the staff wanted feedback and offered suggestions and alterations to meals that were really good.

The room was absolutely amazing. We received a rainforest view room and some of our most memorable experiences were spent sitting on our deck listening to the rain and listening to the forest. The room was incredibly spacious, the bathroom is huge, and the outdoor shower was fantastic. Some of the other reviews mentioned this, but the rooms do get damp (you are in a rainforest and it is expected). A dehumidifier would quickly remedy this, but the dampness is also part of the hotels rain forest charm.

The hike to Rio Celeste is a must. It is muddy, but to see the falls and the amazing blue river is worth it. We also booked the Cano Negro tour and had a fantastic time.

We would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone traveling to Costa Rica. You are secluded, so a 2-3 night stay is probably the most you'd want to do, but it will be one of the best 2-3 nights on your trip.

We recently visited Rio Celeste at the end of Feb 2012 for 3 nights and we must say this was a great hotel hidden in the rain forest. You do have go on unpaved road for a short drive to get to the hotel but it is worth it (adds to the mystique). The hotel is new and beautifully decorated. The staff is very helpful and made our stay incredibly comfortable. We enjoyed a guided hike to the Tenorio National Park which was truly amazing. The hotel restaurant was pretty good and again the staff were very professional and provided excellent service. The rooms were huge with nice, spacious bathrooms with jetted tubs and even a cool outdoor shower. The private terrace was very serene as your surrounded by rain forest trees. We could not have asked for better accommodations. Hope to be back soon!

Room Tip: We were in room 21 and thought it was great room with a private setting.

Positives: Amazing room one of the nicest i have ever stayed in!
Rio celeste hike... long, very muddy! but worth every minute!!
(we didnt have a guide and didn't feel it was neccesary, other people around and
well marked trails)
The staff was very prompt, friendly, and egar to assist.

So we are not picky people so the following things didnt bother us too much but i feel like they are "good to knows"

- Light outside our room wasnt working and the whole property is very dark, poor lighting throughout the grounds and the deck. I am glad i had a flashlight or we would have been in the dark!!
- Even though the hotel informed us they were very full of guests, the whole pool and bar area was totally empty at about 7pm, it was kinda creepy really, the place was deserted. I felt like a little kid i was kinda afraid being in the pool because it was so dark and there was nobody around!
- We had a driver and i could NEVER imagine me and my boyfriend driving that route ourselves without at least getting 2 flat tires on the way. It is 30-40 minute of dusty, bumpy, rocky, road with many holes.
- We only stayed one night and i really think one to two nights is plenty. You literally are in the middle of no where ( adding to my paranoia in the dimmly lit pool area). Unless you are on a honeymoon or with a large group.

It was a great experience and i am glad we stayed, i think after the hike up rio celeste driving back would have been uncomfortable and we would have been exuasted.

The Rio Celeste was absolutely gorgeous. The staff were very friendly and helpful. We thoroughly enjoyed the hotel and location, but the food was a little lacking. It was by no means bad, but not worth the cost. The location was part of the reason we chose the hotel. We chose our trip intinerary based on our desire to see as many parts of the country as we could; Jungle, Volcanoes and the Pacific Ocean beaches. We loved the trip and Costa Rica was a place we will revisit. We would recommend that if you want to get away from it all the Rio Celeste Hideaway is that place, but we did not rent a vehicle and we were forced to use taxis to go on adventures, which can get expensive. The only change we would have made was to spend one less day there so we could explore a little more of the country.

Room Tip: Tips are included on everything already and the dinner buffet is overpriced. If you plan to do any...

Thank you for your terrific feedback. We are glad to hear you came to appreciate and enjoy the hotel's seclusion and remote setting within the rainforest. We are sorry to hear that you were disappointed a bit by the food. I assure you that we are constantly working with the chef to improve the breadth and quality of our offering. I will share your thoughts with the team and when you return to Costa Rica we hope you come back to see our improvements!

We stayed at the hotel for three nights from March 3 to 6 in Casita 23. In summary, the hotel was very relaxing and the remote setting was great to enjoy. The staff were so welcoming and we felt right at home.

Road to the hotel:
As other reviews have mentioned, the road to the hotel is quite rough. We rented a 4x4 which would have been useful in rainy conditions but a sturdy car would have been fine. You can get to the hotel in about 30 minutes from the east. The road is not that bad but just plan on driving a half hour from the highway to the hotel. And if you think the bridge from the west side will be reapired soon, think again. We were told by our guide on the river hiking tour that the bridge has been out for four years so don't expect to see it replaced any time soon. From La Fortuna, it took us 1.5 hours. To get to Liberia airport, it took us 3 hours.

Rooms & Pool:
The room was great and exactly as depicted on the website. The bed was comfortable and we slept so well. The outdoor shower was a treat and we used it every day. During the afternoon, we enjoyed the balcony view into the forest and just relaxing on it. We read a few reviews that commented about a musty smell/feel to the rooms - we did not even notice this. But I would remind people where they are staying. This is a rain forest and the place can get wet and is humid. You can use the air conditioner but we never felt the need for it. The pool and hot tubs are a treat and we spent some time simply relaxing in them. And the restaurant serves food and drinks to the pool which was a bonus.

Restaurant and Bar:
The food was good and we enjoyed every meal we had at the hotel. The selection of dishes on the menu was reasonable and the ceviche was a standout. It is an appetizer but we were almost full after it. Service was good and the staff were attentive. Wilson and Grayby (?) were wonderful and we enjoyed the time the guys gave us while they kept the food moving and plates cleared. Two very good guys!

Hiking Tour to Rio Celeste:
All I can say is that the tour to the river and falls were well worth it. Plan on getting a bit dirty and wet and you'll be fine. It will take at least 4 hours but will be worth it.

Overall, we really enjoyed the hotel and staff. Keep in mind that the hotel is remote, up a rough road and in a rain forest. The place is great spot to get away and if you go with that in mind and don't expect a mall and restaurants down the road, you'll truly enjoy the experience.
