“High Drive Closed 3/15/14”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 15 March 2014

Traditionally, High Drive closed in the winter and reopened once the snow was gone. In 2013, High Drive never opened perhaps because of the Waldo Fire and the fear of fire.

Then in September 2013, torrential rains hit the area and washed out many parts of the road. The plan at this point is to fix the road so that non motorized users (I am not sure about motorcycles) can access the road as a trail and access can be made to other trails, however the U.S. Forest service has sone trails closed for a variety of reasons.

The City of Colorado Springs hopes to allow access starting in August 2014. However, one should check with City Parks.

AT THIS POINT, NO PUBLIC ACCESS IS AUTHORIZED!

“Awesome views”

This is a great drive. So scenic and beautiful. Definitely worth the trip. It's a one way road so you might have to stop and reverse for other cars occasionally.

“worth the drive!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 July 2013

A scenic adventure! When you read "Drive," think of families out for a leisurely day's "drive" in the early and mid 1900s on a primitive road (not "Drive" as in a modern street or highway!) High Drive is at the top of North Cheyenne Canyon and just above Helen Hunt Falls, each beautiful destinations also, so you'll get a "three-fer." High Drive is one-way from the top of the canyon back to town without taking you back thru the canyon or past the falls, so be sure to take the time to enjoy them on the way up! There are no facilities of any type on High Drive, but there are toilets at Starsmore Discovery Center and Helen Hunt Falls on the way to High Drive.

“Awesome drive”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 May 2013

This is a really nice drive to take when visiting the COS area. Much of it is unpaved, but you don't need a 4WD vehicle unless it's a winter mess. Most of the year it's perfectly fine to take a passenger vehicle. There are great views of the city, rock formations, cool tunnels. I like to imagine that it's 100 years ago and what it would have been like to cross the Rockies with horse and buggy. It'll give you a whole new perspective on modern travel.

“Awesome”

I would love to do this drive again. Please beware that there are roads that are dirt with no guard rails. My husband talked me into this drive and I am so glad he did. It was amazing. We went through 2 tunnels in the mountain. We saw lots of mountain bikers along the way so if you have a bike I'm sure it would be a hard but fun ride. The views were breathtaking.
