Assateague Island offers a serene and peaceful experience any time of the year! Be sure to reserve many hours to explore the island. The wild ponies are usually visible and don't seem to be bothered by the tourists.

This 60 mile island, in Virginia and Maryland, is very quiet and peaceful this time of the year. Of course, it is always beautiful. No vendors, restaurants, or tee shirt shops. Just the awesome sand and surf here.

I have now seen the island in all four seasons, and I love them all! If you're a horse lover, this island is a must. Beautiful trails, clean beach, and nice visitor centers.

The civilized part is that Assateague Island is easy to get to. You just drive across the bridge from Chincoteague Island and you enter another world, so near but so far from the things of man. The wild part is when you are walking north along the beach and not seeing another human being for miles, just the dancing birds and shifting sand and blue sky and rolling ocean. Or as Keats wrote, "A thing of beauty is a joy for ever."

We have been staying at Maddox Campground for many years & love it so much that I want to leave my camper there permanately. The shore is an amazing 2 mile drive from the campground & we never miss a sunrise or sunset. Driving the loop, all the amazing birds that seem to pose for pics., the sitka deer, lighthouse, & the beautiful wild ponies: I would love to spend my retirement here. From fine dining & the worlds best she crab soup, to cooking fresh seafood at the campsite, this is simply the most peaceful place in the world.
