De Vere Wokefield Estate
Reviewed 18 January 2014 via mobile

I stayed here as a part of my business conference.
The staff were very attentative, and the quality of the rooms were good, all be it a long walk to my room.
Breakfast was excellent as it is in most De Veres.
Would recommend for any business function.

We stayed as a couple as we both had business in the area. It is set in quite stunning countryside, but sadly the good points end there. We booked for 5 days, but left with a refund after 2.

The service in the bar after we arrived was appalling: over an hour's wait for inedible pizza and salad, despite there being fewer than ten customers in. The waitress was incompetent and disinterested with absolutely no sense of urgency (although the manager did resolve this well by inviting us to eat at the alternate restaurant instead, along with another couple who had encountered the same problem). There are many charming village pubs in the area that serve food and decent beer at very reasonable prices and to use them instead was a no-brainer thereafter.

The worst aspect however was the cleanliness. Our room was very badly in need of a deep clean. There was;

-Lots of mould where the shower joins the wall
-Bathroom wallpaper peeling off and covered in spots of mould
-Mixer taps that looked like they'd never seen a cloth
-Thick dust on surfaces
-Grime on the radiators and switches (that easily came off with a wet-wipe)
-Filled in holes that hadn't been painted over.

To be honest, we should have rejected the room, but we'd arrived in the dark and were tired after a long drive, so just dumped our bags and went to get some dinner. On returning to the room we realised the extent of the issues, and resolved to report it all to reception and insist on a deep clean the following day, which we did.
Imagine our dismay to return from work the next day to discover that just one of the faults had been fixed (the mould around the shower, presumably because it was the first one we mentioned)

Needless to say we demanded again that housekeeping give the room the clean it needed and were assured that this would happen. But, sure enough when we got back later that day, they'd simply ticked another one of our complaints off - the towel rail had been given a bit of a dust.

It was too late to leave so we went to reception and informed that we would be checking out the next day. The lady on reception was apologetic (in fact all the reception staff were very polite) although if I was the manager of this place, i'd be mortified that people were cancelling on hygiene grounds and want to speak to them to resolve.

To put this into context - we have stayed in many low-budget places (including in Albania and Moldova, the poorest countries in Europe) and never felt the need to write a less than average review (check our others) so we aren't the sort of people who delight in listing petty grievances on Tripadvisor, but the level of service at Wokefield Park is simply woefully inadequate for the status the hotel purports to have.

Room Tip: Go somewhere else!!

An impressive hotel as you take the long drive across the golf course. Quick friendly reception although a lot of people milling in reception area and nearly always a party of smokers just by the main doors. Bedroom was excellent, comfy bed and well equipped room and bathroom. The meals in dining room are all buffet which means if you time your arrival wrong you may queue for some time. Great choice of food and all very tasty, its a shame it felt like you were queuing for school dinners.

We stayed here to celebrate our first wedding anniversary. We wanted somewhere nice, away from town with a budget in mind.

Upon arrival, we thought the satnav had taken us to the wrong place! The long driveway through the golf course and then the front of the hotel is stunning. It was the first time we have stayed in a Devere hotel and first impressions were very good.

The reception staff were lovely and helpful. We were introduced to the 'Energy Stations' which offer free hot drinks and biscuits 24 hours a day which is a really nice feature.

The room was lovely, overlooking the rear gardens. Stylish and modern rooms with good facilities. Nice, modern bathroom too.

Fitness and swimming facilities were good, we also played tennis on their tennis courts and we enjoyed walking around the extensive grounds.

Food was good, a little pricey but it was good quality and service was also good.

There seem to be a lot of people reviewing this hotel who are either complete snobs or out of touch with hotels. For the price, the hotel is unbeatable and we were over the moon with our stay. I am well traveled and have stayed in plenty of hotels, this I must say was one of the best.

We will be back.

Every time I went to my room door, the key did not work. So anyone who plans to keep a key in the same bag as their mobile phone, please only stay here if you're happy to make the 10 min walk to reception every time you want to get into your room, as your key will be deactivated each time. Also there is no access to the wifi in my room on the third floor and it's very poorly lit so it's not possible to work in the room after say 4pm in January! Finally, the bedroom was freezing and the bathroom was like a sauna! Not ideal!

Thank you for your feedback unfortunately the room keys can deactivate when kept next to a mobile phone, I would like to express my apologies that you experienced issues with your heating. I have never come across issues with the WIFI not working on the thrid floor and this is something that i am looking into.

We went to this venue last year for NYE celebrations and it was very good with a James Bond theme everything was really great with a large number of people attending so the . Atmosphere was excellent too.and the food was amazing So decided to go this NYE too the theme being narnia we arrived early as we had also booked a room for the night . So at 7pm went down to enjoy the evening , we had to walk through a make shift wardrobe with a glass of bubbly very nice and after that well the rest was a. Bit of a let down not many people attended and the food was a real let down it be honest everyone was moaning about the fatty meat which I could not cut let alone eat anthem rest was just poor after last year the difference was quite noticeable and that was it average disco nothing exciting and as for narnia well if it wasn't for a few people dressing up it would of been the same as being in any disco anywhere .the room was fine with a comfy bed. It the only thing wrong was the floor in the room there wasn't 1 inch you could tread on without it cracking very strange. Breakfast was Good and was served till 1pm no complaints and with 1pm check out that was the best bit .maybe look for a new place to ring in the new year next time round .

Room Tip: All the rooms are lovely and quiet as it is in the country side.

We booked in for an overnight stay not realising that this is a substantial business, conference and golf centre. Finding the entrance was tricky as each part of the complex has its own reception and entrance. Once located parking was tricky as the complex is very busy with business and hotel guests apart from the golfers.

Very modern buildings and facilities with an efficient reception - once you found it. Central concourse enables you to get your bearings quickly and the rooms and restaurant are neat and tidy. The older buildings are worth seeing although you need to be a bit cheeky and just wander around them. Mostly used for conferences they seemed empty and open for a late afternoon exploration. Unfortunately many of the original features have been destroyed or disfigured which is a same, but obviously the owners don't share my interest in historic buildings.

The restaurant provide a good dinner - select carefully and check out the buffet before opting for it. Breakfast was hot and wholesome just whjat was needed before a busy day

Look for a bargain deal and its well worth it.

Room Tip: All rooms are fine look for a bargain
