“Not much for food”
Reviewed 10 December 2013 via mobile

While the drinks are interesting and at have their roots in other places, you have to be a diehard drinker to appreciate them. They have pastries in the corner and those are really not good at all. Face it we all need to have a place to get a good drink and sit down with our friends.

“Rum Distillery in the Colorado Mountains?”
Reviewed 30 September 2013

When planning for a nine day drive through Colorado, I stumbled across information on this distillery. Being rum drinkers, we made this a "must see". Since the location was just around the corner from where we parked, we made this one of our first stops and did a tasting. Their Platino (light) Rum was smooth and what we would expect in a good rum but the Oro (dark) Rum was a real surprise. Rather than the "heavy taste" usually found in dark rums, theirs was quite smooth and balanced. After purchasing a bottle of each, we headed off to explore the town of Crested Butte. After walking the town for a couple of hours, we returned for a couple of their specialty cocktails to quench our thirsts.

Never considered this to be a restaurant!

“Happy Hour Extraordinaire”
Reviewed 26 September 2013

Forget the food. Head here for Happy Hour. The rum and distillery are the attraction.

The rum samplings are fun and provide an opportunity to earn about the types of rum (light or dark) used in drinks and also the interesting history behind the distillery (barrels used to age the rum are first used to age Stranahan's whiskey then sold to Mantanya to age the rum).

Staff friendly and fun, Meredith, our bartender, educated us on history of the distillery, distilling and aging of rum process, and type of rum and ingredients in each drink. She also gave us the options for purchasing different sizes, types, and proofs of rum. Meredith asked us what we liked in a drink then made spot on recommendations. She also gave us a round of complimentary shots of a drink we did not originally select (the Maharaja) but later ordered another round of Maharaja shots).

Go to the website: Montanyarum.com for lots of interesting information about the ownership (female-owned & female distillers) and the ingredients for all of its drinks are online.

While it's easy to see how a rum-fueled party gets high marks in a beautiful Mountain valley Colorado city, OK it is easy but Montanya's friendly & helpful staff made our evening much more than just another place to buy or drink rum.

This was one of our favorite spots after spending 5 days in Telluride and Crested Butte. Go if you're interested in seeing smiles sprout and laughter ring while enjoying a good time with old and new friends.

“FUN and YUM for even a wine drinker”
Reviewed 26 September 2013 via mobile

We loved this place! Old timey oak bar with such fresh, tasty, and delicious drinks. Distillery in the back. Fun to taste the light and dark rum; they are complimentary. I always drink wine and didn't even miss it. We tried 4 different drinks, all great: Maharaja (Indian spices), Strawberry, Cucumber-infused, and piña colada. Bartender and wait staff are friendly and helpful.

“Great way to start the evening...”
Reviewed 16 September 2013

Wow! What a way to start the evening. The atmosphere is unique. The tapas pretty good. But the drinks will send you into orbit.

Dropped by La Montanya based on TripAdivisor reviews and are so very glad we did. We had a couple of their specialty cocktails (apologies as I can’t recall the names) and they were basically liquid desserts. They tasted wonderful. Figured we might have a couple more, but decided to only order one more to share just to make sure we could leave the premises under our own power.

We then went out for a full dinner at another establishment, but returned later for a nightcap only to find La Montanya was closed for the night. Which in hindsight is likely a good thing as we may still be there.
