Double Eagle Hotel/Casino in Cripple Creek has been a favorite of ours for quite some time. We have been staying at Cripple Creek since the early 90’s. We tried many of the bed and breakfast options, other hotels and motels. But we always liked having the hotel, casino, restaurants, and gift shops all under one roof. The staff has always been helpful; bartenders and casino floor workers very attentive. And we generally play enough that all of our room charges get reversed. But things have changed, and I suspect it’s financial in nature.

We checked in on a Thursday afternoon for a 3-night stay. The hotel desk clerk reminded us that 250 points would earn a free room as long as we presented our players card points each evening before midnight. We earned 250 points on Thursday, presented our player’s card, and room charges were reversed. On Friday we did the same, only to be told that the 250 point program was not offered on the weekend. When we explained that we have always done this and that the hotel clerk told us to present our points each night, the clerk only said that she was sorry and didn’t know who might have told us that. Customer service rules #1 – always blame someone else.

The rooms at the Double Eagle have needed attention for some time. They are a bit worn, and the fixtures have been in place since day one. Our first night was very warm. We adjusted the thermostat down to 60 degrees, but it continued to blow warm air. We tried opening the windows, but had bees flying into the room. The next morning, we asked at the hotel desk if there were any issues with the air conditioning. The gentleman at the desk said he stayed at the hotel the previous night, and that his room was just fine – apparently thinking that as long as we knew he was comfortable, it would resolve our problem. He offered to send someone to our room, but no one ever came. Customer services rules #2 – just blow off any customer concerns and move on to the next person. (As a side note, we stayed at a Hampton on this same trip. The A/C in our room didn’t work at all, and they immediately apologized and reassigned us to another room.)

The casino floor itself, in comparison to the other casinos on the main street, has not changed much since its inception. Many of the machines have been there since they opened, and they haven’t kept up with the newer machines found elsewhere - which is why we think their issues are financial.

None of these issues are critical, but taken as a whole we will probably look for other lodging on our next trip. Knowing that our room charges will not be reversed makes Double Eagle less attractive as a lodging option – especially with other, much newer hotel options in town. It’s sad to see what we once considered the star of Cripple Creek in need of so much attention.

We had to have a last minute room for one night, worse night ever!!! Beds and pillows are HORRIBLE!!!! Plus the TV was small and an old one too!! Hardly any channels to watch (now I know you don’t go to a casino to watch tv but when you go to bed you watch tv). Rooms were clean but could of been cleaner. I mentioned these issues to the front desk when I checked out and she just rolled her eyes and said “ok”. Pictures on the website look good but that’s not the case. I figured that this hotel was a newer one so it had to be good.....unfortunately that was NOT the case. I would recommend Century Casino at the other end of the street. Stayed there two nights and it was WONDERFUL!!!! Great rooms and great food!!! Won alittle money too.

I rarely write reviews much less negative ones but you should know this hotel has not been renovated since it was built. We stayed there regularly then but this was our first stay in 10 years since our preferred hotel and all others were booked this weekend. You know it is bad when you can clearly see the beds have a dip when you first walk in the room. When we sat on them you could hear the springs crunching and we sank to the bottom. I really didn’t want to complain because it’s a hassle and we just wanted to get on with our stay but I decided to when I thought about the $100+ we were wasting on what is essentially a flop house. They gave us a different room and said the beds should be better. They weren’t but I gave up the fight. Century Casino has been renovated nicely and is our usual place. DE better put some serious thought into renovating since Bronco Billy’s is building a new hotel. This will be our last stay at DE — lesson learned.

We had a great time here, won a little and the hotel is a great deal. we stayed mid week , room price was fantastic and included breakfast in the restaurant! we are definitely planning on returning soon. It was 26 years since we had been in Cripple Creek, it was fun years ago with the kids, and fun today now its just the 2 of us!

My wife and I made a last minute trip to Cripple Creek and didn't check in till midnight. Staff was friendly and the rooms were clean and tidy. Yeah the place has some miles on it but we found it to be priced right and worth it for a quick stay. Free breakfast included with the room at the restaurant and we could order anything off the menu. Great value for us!
