Since we went in April, the road to the top was closed passed Lake Summit, but it was still gorgeous and a great way to spend the first half of the day. It takes about 45 minutes to get to the turn out in Idaho Springs, then another 30-45 to reach Lake Summit depending on if you stop for photos. The lake was still frozen over and was such a photogenic spot. We took the road down to Evergreen on the way back to make it a loop. Definitely worth it!

The drive up Mount Evans is narrow and can be scary, but the views are beautiful. Go up, look around, and then go back down and have lunch at the Echo Lake Lodge.

In late spring, summer, and fall, enjoy the beautiful views, nature centers, hike a few trails, view the wildlife, and finish by making the 2nd easiest climb of a 14,000 foot peak.

It can be cold any time of year, so go dressed for cold and windy weather at the top. If you are lucky see Mountain Goats and Big Horn Sheep. Enjoy trees twisted and wind blown, or the very small flowers and plants growing in the high alpine meadows.

Driving to more than 14,000 feet is exhilarating . If only the US Forest Service would remove it 's silly fee

Spectacular scenery on the road up and spectacular vistas at the top. Big horn sheep even put on a show next to the very narrow two lane road. It had been many years since my first drive to the summit. I must have forgotten the narrowness of the winding road carved out of the mountain side as this trip was a real "hold on to your seat" experience. A teenage son driving could have been part of the "thrill."

If you are unfazed by a crumbling road with no railing that is carved out of the mountain side, then go all the way to the top. Otherwise you can get 90% of the experience by turning around at the visitor center a few miles before the summit.
