Owner description: The canvas was his ally. The paint and the trowel were his weapons. And the Art World was his enemy. Discover an American Master at the Clyfford Still Museum, home to the world's most intact public collection of a major American artist. From October 14, 2016 to January 15, 2017, the Clyfford Still Museum will display more than 260 of Clyfford Still's works on paper in the Museum's largest exhibition to date. With very few exceptions, paintings will not be on view in the Museum during this time.

The offerings are sparse and it was a bit disappointing after visiting the Denver Art Museum. I think you have to be a real fan of Still to really enjoy this exhibit. They say that the exhibit is changed out on rotation, but I don't see myself going back here. I went because some young artist friends requested an annual pass to this museum as a wedding gift. I bought the membership and decided to see what it was all about. Not my style.

As the only major institution for this great abstract expressionist, it's collection is unparalleled. For an artist who chose his destiny In an art historical context, he is unique.

I'm not sophisticated enough to get excited about blocks of color on gigantic pieces of canvas.
There are a few sketches and paintings that he did before the blocks of color. They were OK.

Unfortunately, I am not a huge art fan, so my opinion may not help. I liked the smallness of this museum, the personal touch of the guide (she was excellent), and the story of how it came to be was nice.
As for the art....well, again, not a huge fan.

This museum is hugely under-appreciated, both in terms of the quality of the art and the history behind it. Clyfford Still was a radical and revolutionary painter, who went against the grain and his contemporaries. The museum is also manageable in size, and so it's an excellent introduction to this style of art. It's also free the first Saturday of the month, which is always fun due to the number and type of attendees.
