“Amazing Historic Hotel in the heart of downtown Denver”
Reviewed 8 October 2009

We stay in the Oxford Hotel for the first time during a recent vacation to Denver. We were extremely impressed with the friendliness of the staff and the awesome historic feel. Instead of staying in a typical hotel, this was a step back in time with real keys and unique rooms. The room service was excellent as well. A very close walk to downtown Denver and Coors Field. Would defitinitely stay here on our next trip! The only negative was the parking..

Was in Denver for the Great American Beer Festival (!!!!) and stayed here as part of the Sam Adams contingent. Despite being an older hotel, it was very nice. The rooms were updated, the lobby was gorgeous. The front desk was amazing - by the second day, they were calling me by my name. Great location - walking distance from the ballpark, some great bars and all of downtown. The one issue is that they sent me a letter saying that I owe $6 for the water I drank in the room, which was never there. So, I've got to deal with that...

I cannot say enough good things about this hotel. First of all the location is wonderful especially if you are coming into Denver by train. The hotel is right across the street from Union Station and you can walk it. Oxford is the oldest hotel in Denver and the renovations are magnificent. The lobby is gorgeous in dark woods and leather and the rooms are wonderfully appointed with heavy drapes, comfy beds and antique-like furniture. We stumbled off the California Zephyr after a bumpy and sleepless night at 8am and there was only one room available with one bed (we booked two beds) The lovely Ms. McDaniel was so gracious to us that she offered us the one room to rest in until our room was ready. This was a life saver. I am traveling with my 85 year old Mom and we got to shower and rest up. By noon we felt revitalized and decided to go on the Grey line’s 4 hour Mountain Parks tour of Denver. This took us through some of the mountains parks such as Red Rocks - gorgeous. We saw bison herds, antelope and ended at Buffalo Bill’s museum and grave. The Grey line picks you up and drops you off at your hotel if you make a reservation - this was a wonderful perk. We ate at the hotel’s McCormick restaurant and it was fantastic. If you like fish this is the place for you to go. In the morning the bell hop took our bags all the way over to the train station for us. All in all a fantastic hotel experience. We will be back.

It costs more, but these rooms are big! The antiques are a bit worn, but the linens and amenities are wonderful. Noise does come in from the street and the hall, but it does quiet down later in the evening. No in-room coffee, but it is down the hall. Also surprised that there was no bath tub, even though the bath was roomy and well lit. It's a smaller hotel, not in "the heart of downtown," but still on the edge of it and grows on you every day you are there.

The Oxford Hotel is the oldest hotel in Denver. I stayed there in 2009 as part of a train trip that required an overnight in Denver. The Oxford was built as a railway hotel and stands almost directly across the street from Denver's Union Station. Given that the station is on the edge of the downtown, the Oxford is also very convenient to downtown Denver.

I like old hotels, especially those that are well maintained. The Oxford is just such a property. I had a lovely suite with a magnificent bathroom (shower only no bath) that was furnished with antiques for a very reasonable (non-prepaid) rate of $220 plus tax. There are a couple of nice restaurants and bars in the hotel and several more just outside the hotel's door.

My wife and I stayed at the Oxford in late July to celebrate our anniversary. We booked through Hotwire and got an incredible rate.

The hotel is in a perfect location for exploring the downtown Denver area. Walking distance to all of the major downtown restaurants, shops, the river, the baseball stadium, etc. The public bus to/from the airport is only 1 block away, so that was very convenient as well.

Since we booked through Hotwire, we had an interior room. The room was in excellent condition, with a recently remodeled bathroom. The interior rooms are a bit dark, so if paying full price, ask for an outside room and it will be brighter. The bed was comfortable and the furnishings were a nice mix of antique and contemporary.

The hotel staff was very friendly and the car service was handy, but not always timely. I waited 20 minutes for them to pick me up one night.

Otherwise the stay was fabulous and I would definitely stay here again.

Tip: Jax bar across the street has some great happy hour deals, and there are many restaurants within a few blocks.

For $20 or $30 more you can upgrade and get a larger room with a nice view. Well worth it. Otherwise the basic room is on the small side and the window looks at a brick wall. Furniture in rooms is quaint and eclectic, a bit cheap. Elevators are small with a rug trying to cover a bare funky floor. "Spa/fitness" is a short walk down the street but not at the hotel. Not sure any of that qualifies as 4 star.
