Rio Grande Southern Hotel B&B
Ranked #3 of 4 Dolores B&B and Inns

Rio Grande Southern Hotel Bed & Breakfast is the second oldest building in Dolores, Colorado. The accomodating couple running the B&B are terrific - - clean rooms, awesome food (restaurant downstairs), totally historic - - everything you could ask for in a B&B! We'll be back any time we're in Colorado. Don't stay at a national chain hotel in Cortez - - drive the 10 min up to Dolores and enjoy the finest Colorado has to offer. We weren't sorry we did - - it made all the difference in our trip.

Room Tip: Ask for the Teddy Roosevelt room - -

We had reservations at the Rio Grande for 3 rooms (6 adults) and when making the reservation I verified that we had 3 queen rooms, 2 with private baths and 1 with bath across the hall. When we arrived, we walked into the "lobby" with 3 gentlemen were watching the football game. One gentleman was on an old leather sofa with 2 dogs laying on the sofa with him. The carpet was threadbare and there were stacks of magazines all over the coffee table. It was obvious that no one had cleaned or "tidied up" in quite a while. No one got up to greet us until there was a break in the action on the football game. The owners indicated that they had rented the rooms I had reserved to other travellers who were staying more than one day and they had 3 rooms for us, but we would have to all share one bath. They did offer to show us the rooms before checking in. We were all a little hesitant to say anything negative in front of the owners, so we checked in. Then we were shown our "rooms". Two of the rooms had an opening between them that was in the process of being "closed off" and there was unpainted wall/trim. The other room had mismatched shades at the windows. There was a TV in that room which did not work. The "decor" looked like garage sale items with bath mats beside the beds instead of area rugs, etc. After seeing the rooms, we decided that we did not want to stay and told the owners we were going to stay somewhere else. They were very understanding about this and voided our charges. I would feel much better about the whole situation if the owners had contacted me to let me know the rooms weren't available and that they were going to put us in rooms that, hopefully, are in the process of being refurbished. The hotel is pretty and with the right restoration could be a great bed and breakfast.

We recently stayed at the Rio Grande Southern Hotel B&B during our vacation out west. Its proximity to Mesa Verde National Park first attracted us, and once we were in Dolores, what a delightful little town it is! The B&B is the oldest building in Dolores, and the lobby has several framed photographs of the place through the years. It has charm, coziness, and gorgeous natural surroundings which reminded us of B&Bs where we have stayed in Germany. We felt very much at home in our clean, comfortable suite - full bath, sitting/TV room, and queen-sized bed. WiFi if you need it, too!

It was a real treat to wake up to the delicious aroma of breakfast cooking, and wow, do they ever feed you! The food was outstanding as well as filling! Sheila and Doug were the ultimate hosts, apprising us of travel routes and suggestions for other outdoor activities besides Mesa Verde. Here is an area where you can really enjoy the beautiful great outdoors, and the Rio Grande Southern B&B is the perfect place to hang your hat at night. Excellent value, very reasonable rates. Highly recommend.

This was our first trip to the Four Corners area, and we are so glad we stayed here! It's apparent that Sheila loves the area, and she gave us excellent tips on local attractions like Mesa Verde, Telluride and the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad. The aspens were turning while we were there, which was quite a treat.

Dolores is a charming little town, and the accommodations were so cozy (LOVED the soap and shampoo). The down-home cooking is to die for -- my mouth is watering just thinking of the brisket. It was great to have free wifi service as well.

We can't wait to return and enjoy more of the hospitality and local beauty.

The Rio Grande B&B offers what most hotels, B&B's, etc. lack, and that's the homey feeling of warmth and comfort. Most places I've stayed throughout the country nowadays seem commercial, and almost alien to me, and it was comforting to know the Rio provided me with something better. Family food, family service, and a family stay. All food was homemade and fresh. Family-owned, and makes you feel ike you're a part of theirs. Sheila, the owner, won't rest until all her guests are completely set with their requests. The rooms are very comfortable, and much of the facility's historical vibe remains preserved.

My sister and I stayed for several days at the Rio Grande. It is such a lovely, charming place -- which fit in with the town. I like the fact that it's off the main highway, yet walking distance to the river, market, and a nice brewery. Mesa Verde was just a few minutes away, and Telluride was only about an hour away and a beautiful drive. We were just across the street from the park during the local Escalante Days festival, which was such a blast. The service was great and the food outstanding. You definitely get the B&B feel, especially in the restaurant, where everyone chats with each other and the locals who come to dine. Sheila, Don, and Doug are great hosts!
