Felt like part of the family here. Very comfortable, clean room, full of character. Peaceful location convenient for Mesa Verde. Generous helpings of home cooking - nothing fancy, but good value.

We spent two nights at the Rio Grande on the tail end of a two week trip and the stay itself was one of the best parts of the trip. Therooms were very nice and the food was awesome. We had connecting rooms and our pre-teen children appreciated having their own room and their own beds. Don, Sheila and Doug are extremely friendly and made us feel right at home. Dolores is a nice small town with a lot of charm. We walked to the river and to the park. We would highly recommend staying at the Rio Grande. We had a great time and it was less expensive than getting one room at some of the places in Cortez.

We spent a couple days at the Rio Grande as a base to do some work on a recently purchased property in the nearby mountain. Sheila and Doug were great hosts and accomodated my husband's special menu requests with ease and pleasure. Our energetic dog was also welcomed and the resident dogs were friendly and accepting also. Despite its age, the property is very clean and all the plumbing works great. Wi-fi access is provided if you bring your laptop. The restaurant is not only the place for some great food with generous portions, but also the spot to meet the local "characters" as well as interesting fellow travelers. For a comfortable, no-cares stay in a small town with great access to SW Colorado attractions, the Rio Grande in Dolores is a fun and reliable alternative to generic motels in Cortez.

We stayed at the Rio Grande Southern Hotel B&B for three nights in May for our 7th wedding anniversary. I was apprehensive, because there were no reviews on Trip Advisor and I knew nothing about Dolores. My fears were slighly eleviated when I corresponded with the owner via email. Sheila promptly responded to all my inquiries and even offered to prepare us a special anniversary dinner during our stay.

Our stay was delightful! The B&B is the oldest building in Dolores and has always been a boarding house, which adds a lot of charm to the character of the place. The new owners also add a lot of charm.

The b&b style hotel has a restaurant below with the rooms on the second floor. The room comes with a full breakfast every morning (you can chose anything off the extensive menu). We stayed in the Zane Gray Suite (the famous Western author actually stayed in the same room). We had tons of space; a sitting area, a bedroom area and a full bath with tub and shower. The room was very clean and offered very nice shampoos and soaps (a touch I wasn't expecting in tiny Dolores, Colorado). They also have free wi-fi!

The food in the hotel's restaurant is outstanding! Doug will cook up just about anything you want. We stuffed ourselves on fried fish with hand cut fries, steak, fry bread, eggs, sausage, green chilis and so and and so on! It's worth having dinner at this place at least once or twice during your stay. Plus, the prices are very good and you will not walk away hungry.

Dolores is a very small. quiet town. We chose to stay in Dolores because it was a good home base for exploring Mesa Verde National Park (15 minutes) and Hovenweep National Monument (40 min). The brewery across the park from the hotel is a good place to cool off with a beer after a long day of exploring the ruins. However, the service at the brewery is terrible! Be prepared to wait, wait and wait with no apologies. Thankfully, their beer is pretty good.

We highly recommend the Rio Grande Southern! Be prepared to engage in interesting conversations with the owners and locals who frequent the restaurant. After three days, we felt like "regulars" at the Rio Grande and we loved it.

Note: Great place for animal-lovers. There are two dogs onsite, and pets are welcome.
