As a one-night stop-over on our 25th anniversary vacation through the state of Colorado, the Country Sunshine B&B was a very relaxing, very comfortable stay that we really needed after a long day in Durango and Silverton, and the train ride. Walter and Jodi were so gracious and accommodating to us.

On our evening there, fresh cookies were offered, along with a freshly prepared cake with ice cream... a great dessert to end our tiring day in the area.

The Aspen room was very spacious and comfortable. The only detraction was the creaky floor above us in the Riverview room above us around bedtime. You can hear the guests walking overhead in the room above, but for our visit the floor noise did not last long, and we were able to get a good night's sleep.

The next morning, Walter cooked a delicious breakfast of potato pancakes with apple butter, and "chicken and apple sausage" after a fresh fruit cup. With perfect weather and morning temperature, we were able to eat our breakfast outside on the deck and watch the birds at the multiple bird feeders Walter and Jodi have in the backyard.

They even have a PC with internet access (if you need it).

The Country Sunshine is a very nice B&B that I would recommend to anyone. Thanks for the wonderful (but brief) stay, Walter and Jodi! We'll come back if we find ourselves in the Durango area again in the future.

My girlfriend and I stayed at Country Sunshine for 2 nights in May during our road-trip through the 4-Corners-Region. And the stay at Jodi's and Walter's nice and beautiful loacted B&B was - wihtout a doubt - the best stay of the whole journey.

The B&B is located just 10 Miles north of Durango directly near the Animas River in impressive and peaceful surroundings. Right from the start, when Walter greeted us (communicating with us in German, since he was born in Austria) we felt at home. We booked the Writer's Den, but got a free update to an even bigger and nicer room. Drinks in the fridge were free to consume. Same goes for by Walter baked cookies. Every evening Walter prepares dessert (first night flambe'd caramelised banana, second night flourless chocolate cake with icecream - a dream!) for the guests. Brakfast - of course - is immaculate as well. Fruit salad and a freshly cooked warm entree. And cereals if you like.

They do have two nice a dogs and a sweet cat. And lots of birds in the garden - even hummingbirds. We had a reservation for the Durango-Silverton-Railroad and Walter arranged for us that we could board in Rockwood, not in Durango. Which saved us an hour - meaning the possibilty to sleep longer - or enjoy your breakfast not in a hurry. That was really a very good idea and an absolutely nice service.

In general the B&B has everything you are looking for in a B&B. Walter and Jodi must be the nicest innkeepers on earth, the B&B itself was really sweet and relaxing. So were the surroundings. The even have a hottub.

Until now I stayed in quite some B&Bs (in England, Scottland or the USA) - but Country Sunshine comes the defintion of "the perfect B&B" pretty close.

Thanks for everything Jodi and Walter!!!

Without doubt one of the best bed and breakfast places i have ever stayed. The proprieters were welcoming, nothing was too much trouble.
The evening pudding and breakfast were to die for.

It was a fantastic choice to stay with Jodi and Walther at the Country Sunshine B&B. My wife and I enjoyed the stay and were made very comfortable. The room we picked (Writers Den) was very cozy, clean and a great choice. The breakfasts every morning were scrumptious.
This was our very first time staying in a B&B and we enjoyed every moment of it. Our hosts were great in recommending restaurants and trails and ensured we had a great time.
Will return next time we are in the Durango area.

What a house & what a location! It is located a short drive from Durango, a cute town close to New Mexico. Upon arrival Jodi gave us a tour of the house, offering homemade cookies, fruit, drinks, whatever we wanted. The house is in a very quite location with a 'bird tree' right in from of the porch. Amazing to see all those hummingbirds, woodpeckers etc. First we went for diner (Walter gave some nice restaurant recommendations, we ended up have a drink in Strater's and diner at Mutu's, an italian restaurant serving nice fresh pesto!). Walter had told us he would make dessert for us and the other guests later. And it was delicious! Flambe'd caramelised banana with vanilla ice cream. What a treat! After a good night's sleep (very comfortable bed - very nice bathroom!) Walter prepared breakfast. Homemade sweet potato pancakes & chicken / apple / nuts sausage. Again a treat! Unfortunately we were here only for 1 night and did not enjoy the hot tub outside. A real pity. We should go back there for at least a week to get totally relaxed...

Stacey and I had the pleasure of staying at Country Sunshine for 7 nights. It is located in a treed area not too far from Durango and far enough off the highway so that there is no road noise. Jody and Walter make their guests feel very much at home. The minimum expectation of a B&B is a good breakfast and a clean, pleasant room. After that, you are on your own. Walter and Jody go above and beyond those expectations. The breakfasts are well prepared and very tasty, made as soon as you sit down. The night before you are informed of the breakfast to be served with the opportunity to make changes if one desires. Also, a dessert of some kind is served every evening. They also had fresh baked cookies, fruit, espresso, teas, wine, beer, and sodas. The hot tub was wonderfully relaxing at the end of a day of hiking. They also had movies available to watch.
At some point they ask you your plans for the day and suggest the best way to get there or alternatives. For instances, we wanted to ride the Durango and Silverton Railroad. They suggested that we board at Rockwood Junction which is very near their home. We would miss the views from Durango to their house but that follows the highway anyway. At the Junction, the railroad veers off the highway and follows the gorge very closely with spectacular views.
We like to hike and they had many maps for hiking. Also, they had compiled quite a few restaurant menus and suggested various restaurants to try in the evening.
If you are a birder, you will appreciate the colorful variety of mountain birds attracted to the bird feeders right outside the breakfast table door on the large deck.
In short, they make an effort for you to enjoy yourself, not only while at their B&B but your entire stay in the Durango area.
Finally, one of the enjoyable aspects of a B&B is the variety of people. During our short stay in the off season, we met a couple from France with their two children; a couple from South Africa, as well as Walter’s nephew from Austria and his girlfriend who happened to arrive during our stay, just to name a few of the more interesting people.
Stacey and I travel every six months and have stayed in B&Bs in the USA and Europe. Jody and Walter’s B&B is tied for first place with a B&B in Bath, England. You will not go wrong staying with Jody and Walter.

Driving in from Phoenix it was a long day made longer when I excitedly took the wrong driveway off of the highway a quarter mile too early. Instead of finding the clear and easy path to Country Sunshine I found my city car stuck in the snow and mud. I called Walter to let him know we were in the area but running late and learned immediately that we had made the right decision in booking with Country Sunshine as we not only got picked up where we were, but invaluable assistance in getting the car out from our gracious hosts the next morning.
The house itself feels like a cozy lodge with a friendly fire every evening, complimentary drinks (beer/wine/soda/water/coffee/tea) and cookies always available, dessert every night, gourmet breakfasts, bird watching out the windows, jacuzzi soaks after long days exploring, beautiful mountain views, a wrap-around deck and fantastic gracious hosts that can be coaxed into great life stories if desired making it feel like you're starting a great new friendship.
As far as the room itself, we stayed in the Golden Oaks room which featured a very comfy bed, sitting area, TV/VCR (movie selection is solid), picture windows, room heater, private bath, shower, jetted tub, picturesque fireplace and all the little amenities that give it that personal touch that a hotel room can't possibly match. (Let them know if it's a special occasion by the way. ;)
For my wife and I we simply wanted to get away. We didn't have any ideas regarding what we would do during the day but Country Sunshine helped mention many many options regarding activities, locations, and fine dining opportunities in the local area. We tried three of the dining suggestions and they were all fantastic. There was so much available in the winter that we are looking forward to a return trip for entirely new experiences. Three nights there was not enough.
