“Charming place”
Reviewed 11 June 2013

Beginning of May, we spent a couple of days at The Gable House, in Durango. We were just looking for a comfortable place, nearby Mesa Verde, but I was touched by pictures in internet and decided to stay at The Gable House.
It was a wonderful experience. It is a beautiful historic house, with large and comfortable rooms, combining old and modern furniture and decoration. The overall impression is excellent, smart and cosy. the house has, as well, a very nice garden that we have no time to enjoy, unfortunately.
But the most important is the way Heather and her family treats her customers. You feel like at home.
And breakfast is excellent!!

I like to be fair in reviews. The rooms were plain, none of the quaintness of usual B&Bs, no a/c. At 11pm I was awoken by incessant dog barking and partying in the neighborhood. In fairness to Heather who is a lovely manager, she called the police when I finally sought her out at 2AM. By that time my night was ruined. I simply can't believe this is the first time that dog has been a problem. Because of the lack of a/c closing the windows wasn't an option in the hot weather. Heather was most fair and didn't charge us for the night. Wedding partake in breakfast so I can't comment on that. My point is tobe aware before you book of potential problems. Atleast in a hotel you can close the windows to block out sound. B&Bs may not be for everyone.

Here at the Gable House Bed & Breakfast, the comfort of our clientele is of the utmost importance. With the help of the local police, the owner of the dog who happens to be a new resident of the neighborhood was made aware of the City of Durango’s sound ordinance, which clearly prohibits any such disturbances. Even though the dog’s barking has ceased to be an issue going forward, it is unacceptable that the restful stay of one of our guests should be disturbed. And so, in accordance with our policy, we comped their stay. Sincerely, Heather

We just spent 5 nights at the Gable House. A wonderful experience. Heather, who runs the B&B, took special care to preparing gluten free breakfasts - and what delicious breakfasts they were! Heather has a relaxed, calm style that makes you feel right at home. The house itself is a huge Victorian gem set in a quiet Durango neighborhood within a few minutes walk to the Main Ave. shops. Definitely recommend this B&B!

We stayed at the Gable House on our way home from Arizona. It was wonderful. Heather gave us her last available room which had a private bath which was not in suite but just a few feet down the hallway. I was a Little hesitant at first but it was great. I never even ran to any of the other guests in the hall while going to or from the bathroom. It was very comfortable.
Breakfast was wonderful!!

Gable House is a restored Victorian beauty in a quiet neighborhood within easy walking distance of Durango's main street and Fort Lewis College. Its hedged yard has several discreet sitting areas beside gardens, some of which grow the herbs and fruits that make the morning breakfasts so delicious!

My wife and I were here for a vacation weekend right after a Colorado business trip, and were very happy to leave behind hotels to stay in a more personable environment and a place with so much character. As twenty-somethings we love good bed & breakfasts and Gable House immediately became a new favorite. We're looking forward to going back!

Our room was quaintly furnished after the Victorian style, comfortable and roomy, with a private bathroom just down the hall. Some might prefer an adjoining bathroom, which I understand Gable House does also offer, but since the bathroom was reserved for our private use it was no big deal at all to walk a few feet down the hall.

We enjoyed minimal interaction with other guests during our gourmet breakfasts (like homemade huevos rancheros, and pear bread made with pears harvested that morning from Gable House's pear tree!), even finding new friends with another couple our age, but apart from breakfast we were scarcely aware that other people were staying in the house that weekend.

Heather, who owns, restored, and runs Gable House, is warm, welcoming, and perfectly hospitable, and knows her town very well. She was able to recommend to us several activities that only locals would know best, all of which turned out to be excellent. We loved our stay at Gable House, wholeheartedly recommend it, and can't wait to get back =)

This was our first US B&B & a very good experience after 3 weeks of chain hotels, mostly of indifferent quality,
The house is lovely as was our room. Heather, our landlady, couldn't have been welcoming. For reasons not relevant to this review, I was very flustered when we arrived & she calmed me down & sorted me out in a most kindly way.
We had 2 excellent & very different breakfasts, another welcome change from the hotels. Sitting with other guests at the large dining table with Heather at the head felt very civilised!
The house is in a good location, a short but interesting walk from Durango's main street & a brisk 20 minutes to the railway station. It is very pleasant just walking round the quiet tree lined streets to see the elegant houses in this part of the town.

The place was beautiful and hostess wonderful. It helped that we had the whole place to ourselves. Food was great; location fantastic - you couldn't get much closer to downtown yet still be in quiet neighborhood.

Room Tip: all the rooms were beautiful
