This is a nice course but it is very hard. Not a place for your average golfer. The course is tight target golf with homes on every hole. We played on a Thursday and we were the first group out. They sent two twosomes out after us. We let the first twosome through on the 4th hole. On the 15th hole the second twosome caught up to us. There was nobody behind that twosome. After we finished 16 the ranger told us we had to skip 17! We were at 4 hours and 10 minutes into the round at that point and we lost 10 minutes when we let the first twosome through. The ranger was a jerk. We skipped 18 and went to the Pro Shop and the Pro refunded our money. For my money I'd skip Dalton and play Hillcrest in town. Or better yet drive to Farmington and play Pinon Hills.

Somehow, even with water on 16 of 18 holes, I shot my best score of the year at DR. Playing with my wife on a beautiful August day, we look forward to playing here again next year. Really good greens and a very friendly staff. Good mix of long and short holes - 5 miles north of Durango. Not sure it was worth $90, but what the heck. Back home in Austin, the most expensive public access courses are only $80, so take my comment with a grain of salt - DR is definitely worth playing at least once....

Dalton Ranch is a very good mountain course and the greens were in great shape for early April. It was good value including a reasonable junior rate. It has an interesting layout and can be quite challenging using the back tees. Friendly and competent staff.

This is not a course for hackers. Ken Dye has designed a challenging but lovely course. Some tough undulating greens with some tricky approach shots. There are some particularly interesting short par fours with risk/reward trade offs. The condition of the course of is consistently good. The holes along the river are particularly beautiful. Nice views of mountains up the valley and red sandstone cliffs to the east. This is a far better course than Hillcrest (a muni by Ft. Lewis College) and is a more challenging course than the three 9s at the Glacier Club, although the views at the Glacier Club are spectacular, as beautiful as any course anywhere.
