General Palmer Hotel

The General Palmer hotel is right in the heart of Durango on Main St. There are many good restaurants within walking distance. It is right by the train depot if you are there for the train ride. It is within many historical and natural monuments. We went to Mesa Verde and 4 Corners but wished we had time to do more. If you are going to Durango it is a great place to stay

I especially address this review to those planning to ride the extraordinary Durango & Silverton tourist train --- the hotel is located only a block away from the D&S station, and your stay will be enlivened by the beautiful sound of the steam engine's whistle as the trains cross the street adjacent to the hotel. In the lobby is a beautiful portrait of General William Jackson Palmer, the founder of the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad (and, not coincidentally, of Durango itself). The rooms are beautifully decked out in deliciously Victorian decor and comforts, including thick cotton robes, fine woods, brass beds (at least in my room), and a big, cuddly teddy bear. My room was nicely equipped with a hair dryer, iron and ironing board, ambient sound unit, LED TV, coffee maker, and more. My bed was super-comfortable -- and, although the window looked out on a busy street, it was surprisingly quiet. I found the staff to be friendly, courteous, and helpful. My only criticism is that the complimentary breakfast was a bit disappointing, but there are plenty of options nearby. Even if you're not interested in the train, the General Palmer is a great location for Durango shopping, positioned at the base of Main Street and its numerous, nifty shops and restaurants. I think this is one of the world's great hotels, not to be missed by anyone wishing to savor the richness and depth of Durango's historical experience.

My fiance and I headed up to Durango a day early before meeting friends in Telluride. We were recommended the General Palmer to stay at and we loved it!!! Cute, quaint 1890's hotel. We stayed in a queen bed room with a window. The hotel is centrally located on Main Street so we were able to walk around the shops, grab lunch and dinner all without leaving in our car and looking for parking. Although we didn't have time to ride the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Train, we were able to check out the train and the museum. We hope to be back one day and actually have time to ride the train. The staff was great at the hotel, the breakfast was good and they even had cookies in the afternoon. I would definitely stay here again, it was one of my favorite places!

Room Tip: I would suggest booking a room with a window and even though we are used to a king size bed at home...

This hotel is beautiful! Classic 1880's style with modern conveniences. Authentic furnishings throughout the hotel lobby and rooms. Modern conveniences include a cute little elevator, first even TV, in room coffee, free continental breakfast, free parking adjancent to hotel, the narrow gauge railroad station is half a block away and you can watch the train from the second and third storey decks! It's on the main stet and eat waking to all the restaurants and shopping. I like this place!

On our recent two-week road trip of Colorado and New Mexico. We spent two nights in Durango, and selected the General Palmer Hotel. It was the perfect choice. This restored 1898 hotel offers the comfort and hospitality that the greatest hotels in US aspire for. The rooms are elegantly appointed, and furnished to provide the guests the highest comfort. You experience the Victorian elegance and the Southwestern hospitality as soon as you step in the lobby of this hotel. If you are interested in historic sites, this is a place you don’t want to miss.

The hotel is two stories and only 39 units. It is located in the center of town and within walking distance of all the points of interest. The original elevator is still functional. The friendly staff rounds the charm of this hotel.

This hotel is at the top of my list of places to stay.

Room Tip: Our room had two windows facing the street, and it was not noisy.

You really feel like you are back in the Old West when staying at this hotel. Old time elevator, freshly baked cookies every day, windows you can open and hear the clip-clopping of the horse and buggies - overall FUN!

I wasn't able to get a reservation when I was first planning our vacation, so when we walked past I took a chance and went up to the desk clerk to see if their had been any cancellations. There was and I'm so glad of it! We had a room overlooking Main Street and at nights we would open our windows and listen to the band across the street. Beautiful decor from what could be 100 years ago, but still has the tech we want in the 21st century. A great touch was first coming into the room and hearing classical music playing on their CD/clock radio. Nice touches like that make it worth staying here everytime we come here
