We were a little apprehensive about staying here after reading some of the negative reviews but our one bedroom condo, #34, was excellent.
It was on the top floor (with lots of steep stairs to climb when we arrived with all our luggage and it was a very hot day....) but, once inside, we were very impressed with the views of the mountains, which I don't think would have been the same from a lower floor. The condo itself was very comfortably and attractively furnished and was very spacious and well equipped and very light . There were lots of large windows and we got the sun in the morning in the bedroom and in the living area in the evening - ideal! The air-con worked well but was a bit noisy so we turned it off at night in the bedroom. There was a table and chairs outside on a wooden landing which we didn't use it as it wasn't a very private area and was overlooked by other properties. This didn't particularly bother us as the dining area in the condo was very good. Might bother some people, although I have to say that the photos on the website are quite accurate about the outside (as indeed they are of the inside).
The property is not within walking distance of Durango as it is uphill all the way back! I think the receptionist could have been more helpful when we checked in and asked about parking as she told us it was virtually impossible and only available on meters. She also told us that there was a bus which ran every half hour or so but she had no idea of the timetable. I know a lot of people stay here when visiting the nearby college, but it can't be the first time that people have stayed to visit Durango itself and have asked the same questions as us! She also gave us a very poorly photocopied map of the town that we could barely read, and that was it. Fortunately, the next day we found the excellent Visitor Information centre on an approach road to Durango (which we had not passed on our way from Telluride into Durango). There we were given an excellent, clear map and we were told that there was ample FREE unlimited parking on all the streets outside the two blocks which were classed as the historic area. There was also a large parking lot near the train station which charged 7 dollars a day. When we were there (16-19 June) we had absolutely no problem, easily parking in the first street adjacent to the historic area. I can't think why anyone would choose to pay at a meter and be restricted on time!
We took the steam train to Silverton and the coach back. This was an amazing day out and is thoroughly recommended. We booked from the UK and were very glad we did as it would have been difficult to get tickets for the day we wanted if we had waited until we got there. The atmosphere was fantastic: banjos playing, people dancing, crowds milling and taking photos and the train's bell clanging and the whistle blowing! Very exciting! The views on the 4 hr trip were wonderful and we can recommend sitting in the open gondola. In Silverton we enjoyed eating at Handlebars for lunch (another recommendation from the tourist office - head there first before the crowds get there!).
Ferringway may be a little further out of town than we would have liked, but once we had sorted out the parking, we were very happy with its situation. All the motels we saw were on the north side of town and were also quite a hike from the centre of town, so if you want to cater for yourself and have more space we still think Ferringway is a good option. There is a good supermarket nearby, Albertson's on the southern edge of town, for all your supplies. There is ample parking on the Ferringway site, but no lift, so it might not suit everyone. Also apartments may vary as they are privately owned. The website says that you can't book a particular apartment, but if you compare the different types of condos carefully you can be pretty sure of getting what you want. We were anyway. We had a very happy time there and, based on our experience, we would certainly recommend it as a good place to stay.
