“Great family getaway”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 July 2014 via mobile

Our family of 6 has stayed here a number of times. Although the apartments can be a bit run down/dated sometimes you can't beat the price and space. This is our home away from home. It gives you the convenience of a fully stocked kitchen, multiple bedrooms, separate living space, and washer and dryer. A fireplace is also in each apartment.

If you want to be able to walk out your door and explore the town this is not the place for you. It is about a 5 min drive to where all the shops and restaurants are.

Ferringway is an apartment complex about 2 miles up a hill out of Durango. I believe each apartment is privately owned so guess the level of furnishing and equipment depends on the owner and luck of the draw. Our apartment was excellent with lovely decoration, furniture and stacked with kitchen appliances and equipment.

It did however feel a little isolated - we arrived after the 4pm check in and had to follow a map to pick up a key left in an envelope and then navigate quite a large complex to find our apartment. It was located up three flights of steps so carrying heavy cases was not fun. Also didn't see anyone else over the entire stay making the place feel deserted. None of these were issues to us but may be for others.

Also be aware they take the fee from your credit card several weeks before you arrive and you definitely need a car to get to town.

Durango itself was great - loved the Diamond Belle for dinner (a western themed bar and restaurant - great fun and good food) and the Silverton train was excellent.

All in all - great for us.

We have two small children and wanted to get out of Albuquerque for the weekend and did not want just a hotel. We booked our Condo and were in Unit 26 and absolutely LOVED IT! The décor was great, nice and clean and it just had an all over homey feel to it. We relaxed in front of the fireplace and the kids loved the DVD movies there in the Condo and our daughter was thrilled with the Loft Bedroom. We very pleasantly surprised, it surpassed our expectations and at a affordable cost that a hotel room would have run, it is a no brainer. We HIGHLY recommend Ferringway and will definitely be back and refer all of our friends here on the base! Thank you for a great stay!!

Room Tip: May want to request a room with a better view of the mountains.

We enjoyed the condo in Durango because it's an easy get-a-way from Albuquerque. Our condo was on the ground floor so no stairs and it had a bedroom for us and a loft for the children. The condo's are just outside downtown, are family friendly and the staff to be very friendly.

Room Tip: Ground floor units have no stairs

Looking for somewhere more home from home rather than a hotel. Always bit of a gamble moving away from the tried and tested hotel chains but this was a very welcome surprise. It was a one bed condo (unit no. 7); very comfortable with a great lounge/dining room and a well-lit and equipped kitchen. It was snowing on arrival but i quickly worked out how to turn on the heating and the place was warm and toasty.

The only downside was the creaky floors; the people in the unit above me seemed to spend all night walking to/from the bathroom. I'd stay again but I'd make sure that I got an upper floor unit.

Room Tip: Go for an upper floor unit to avoid issues with creaking floorboards.

The condo was very expensive for what you get in my opinion, and they charge you 2 weeks before your stay without telling you and if you cancel the reservation (months in advance), they charge you $25.

Here's a list of issues we had:

Check in is at 4 but they didn't answer the phone and were not at the office before at 3 or at 4-4:10 when we went back. They put the keys in an envelope at the owner's residence but that information isn't clear because it says that is for "after hours check-ins". We never had contact with anyone.

Our deadbolt didn't work to lock the condo from the outside

The airfreshner they used (to cover up a mildewy, unpleasant odor throughout the kitchen was so overpowering that we had to put it outside.

Check out is at 11, but they knocked on our door at 10 asking when we would be leaving.

The location is not close to the city. You definitely have to drive to go to dinner, but it is close to Fort Lewis College.

Everything is out dated and smells like it, but this isn't a major issue.

The fireplace is nice and there was easily accessible wi-fi (not all units have this and I'm not sure it would be possible to get a hold of anyone to find out if you will get one of those units) and laundry.

We were a little apprehensive about staying here after reading some of the negative reviews but our one bedroom condo, #34, was excellent.

It was on the top floor (with lots of steep stairs to climb when we arrived with all our luggage and it was a very hot day....) but, once inside, we were very impressed with the views of the mountains, which I don't think would have been the same from a lower floor. The condo itself was very comfortably and attractively furnished and was very spacious and well equipped and very light . There were lots of large windows and we got the sun in the morning in the bedroom and in the living area in the evening - ideal! The air-con worked well but was a bit noisy so we turned it off at night in the bedroom. There was a table and chairs outside on a wooden landing which we didn't use it as it wasn't a very private area and was overlooked by other properties. This didn't particularly bother us as the dining area in the condo was very good. Might bother some people, although I have to say that the photos on the website are quite accurate about the outside (as indeed they are of the inside).

The property is not within walking distance of Durango as it is uphill all the way back! I think the receptionist could have been more helpful when we checked in and asked about parking as she told us it was virtually impossible and only available on meters. She also told us that there was a bus which ran every half hour or so but she had no idea of the timetable. I know a lot of people stay here when visiting the nearby college, but it can't be the first time that people have stayed to visit Durango itself and have asked the same questions as us! She also gave us a very poorly photocopied map of the town that we could barely read, and that was it. Fortunately, the next day we found the excellent Visitor Information centre on an approach road to Durango (which we had not passed on our way from Telluride into Durango). There we were given an excellent, clear map and we were told that there was ample FREE unlimited parking on all the streets outside the two blocks which were classed as the historic area. There was also a large parking lot near the train station which charged 7 dollars a day. When we were there (16-19 June) we had absolutely no problem, easily parking in the first street adjacent to the historic area. I can't think why anyone would choose to pay at a meter and be restricted on time!

We took the steam train to Silverton and the coach back. This was an amazing day out and is thoroughly recommended. We booked from the UK and were very glad we did as it would have been difficult to get tickets for the day we wanted if we had waited until we got there. The atmosphere was fantastic: banjos playing, people dancing, crowds milling and taking photos and the train's bell clanging and the whistle blowing! Very exciting! The views on the 4 hr trip were wonderful and we can recommend sitting in the open gondola. In Silverton we enjoyed eating at Handlebars for lunch (another recommendation from the tourist office - head there first before the crowds get there!).

Ferringway may be a little further out of town than we would have liked, but once we had sorted out the parking, we were very happy with its situation. All the motels we saw were on the north side of town and were also quite a hike from the centre of town, so if you want to cater for yourself and have more space we still think Ferringway is a good option. There is a good supermarket nearby, Albertson's on the southern edge of town, for all your supplies. There is ample parking on the Ferringway site, but no lift, so it might not suit everyone. Also apartments may vary as they are privately owned. The website says that you can't book a particular apartment, but if you compare the different types of condos carefully you can be pretty sure of getting what you want. We were anyway. We had a very happy time there and, based on our experience, we would certainly recommend it as a good place to stay.

Room Tip: Compare condo types carefully on the website.
