We'd heard that the Strater Hotel was a beautiful, Victorian Hotel, filled with antique furniture! We were NOT disappointed in that regard! We traveled to Durango to ride on the Silverton Railroad and this was the perfect place to carry out a "turn of the 1900's" theme. The hotel room we were in was small but nicely furnished and the bed was quite comfortable! The price was a bit on the high side compared to other properties that we stayed in during this "Southwest Tour." We loved the proximity to the train and to the downtown area, including very good shops and restaurants. If you have "mobility" concerns, there are stairs to get into the hotel, but they do have a small elevator to get you and your luggage up to your room. A bellman is available, upon request. Coffee was not provided in the room, but our floor had coffee set-up in the public area. The breakfast was good, however, it was quite crowded with tour groups getting an early start.

We spent 10 days at the Strater Hotel while snow skiing at Purgatory ski resort. The room we were in was an old "brothel" suite with authentic furniture from the 1800's......it was a really cool place with good food, good service and incredible atmosphere......go to Belle Star's Saloon downstairs....it's great!

Don't drive up expecting a doorman to welcome you and take your bags.....you have to shlep them up the stairs yourself. Fortunately there is a tiny elevator to get you upstairs to your room. We stayed two nights, but couldn't get the same room for both nights. The first room was large and comfortable. Since we were taking the train trip early in the morning we had to leave our bags packed by the door and the staff moved them to our second room. The second room was considerably smaller and there was peeling paint in the bathroom. The place seemed clean and the beds were comfortable. We were accused of taking something from the "gift" basket in the first room (a keychain) but we protested and it was removed from our bill. The breakfast was ordinary, like you'd get at any discount hotel chain. There were many people staying there in big travel groups, so you had to deal with that at breakfast. It was a disappointing stay. It's great to be a historic hotel but you have to provide some level of service afterall.

If you are a history buff and love a little pampering this is the hotel to stay in Durango. The guest rooms and the public areas have all been decorated tastefully with Victorian decor, while still having all the modern amenities. The hotel offers a fine breakfast and you can spend an enjoyable evening it one of its dining areas. We had an enjoyable time listening to country music while dining in the Diamond Belle Saloon. It was a real blast from the past. The hotel is about two blocks from the Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge railroad and the train passes by the rear of the hotel several times a day. This hotel is perfect for the history buff who still likes to live well!

Room Tip: As all the rooms are decorated differently and room will be an experience to remember. With the train passing by several times during the DAY a room somewhat away from the rear might be preferable for some.
