My husband and I were greeted with such a warm welcome. If you enjoy history this elegant hotel is perfect. We took a risk on our road trip and did not make hotel reservations. We were so fortunate to have the opportunity to stay here with the busy Memorial weekend. Our room was spacious, comfortable and clean, we had three windows that overlooked the main street of Durango. Our room service was somewhat delayed but the food was delicious and fresh. The next morning we had a wonderful breakfast at the hotel with so many great choices for only $5.00. We drove to Mesa Verde, a 45 minute drive for a touring of the Pueblo Indian dwellings. Simply amazing and a MUST!

Room Tip: I think you would enjoy ANY room!

I recently spent the weekend in Durango CO and at the recommendation of a friend we stayed at the Strater Hotel. Billed a grand ole "period" property with the latest comforts and enhancements. Literally, when we arrived the elevators was broken and it remained broken for the entire weekend. As you can imagine, our room on the 4th floor did NOT work out! I requested and was granted a "move" to the first floor, however it was in a much lesser room. ( went from a King Suite to a Queen/Twin combined room) Upon moving, I reported that the drain in the shower was not working whatsoever and the tub thus became a wading pool. This was corrected in a few hours. Additionally, the room was on the sidewalk and incredibly noisy late into the night.

The "saving grace" of the stay was the quality and service provided in the two restaurants on property. ( the Diamond Belle and the Mahogany Grill) Both had food of outstanding quality and great service as well.

Also, to be fair, most of the bell staff and others were as helpful as they could be. However, they're working with a dilapidated property.

One would think that something as critical as an elevator ( they only have one) would be THE single highest priority to be operational on a holiday weekend such as Memorial Day. Not so from mgmt.'s perspective evidently.

Room Tip: IF the elevator is operational you'd definitely want an upper floor room from a noise standpoint

We stayed one night at The Strater and totally enjoyed our stay. Being an old hotel we didn't expect the rooms to be large, but were pleasantly surprised to find ours more than adequate especially for a one night stay. Decor in the room and throughout the hotel was well executed adding to the atmosphere. Parking across the street isn't too much of a problem and the staff were quite helpful. It was the only hotel of 8 we stayed on this trip that didn't have coffee making facilities in the room and the WiFi in the room was non existent, however it worked in the reception area. There was a little noise from the hallway and the next room also, but again I guess that for an old hotel that is to be expected. Position is excellent, right in the middle of the main street, so everything you need including the railway station is only a couple of minutes walk.

The Strater Hotel advertises that you can stay in a museum, and I would say that is accurate. There has been a lot of updating done to the rooms and the common areas. Much has been done well. However, overall, there is more work needed to be in the ranks of a modern hotel. The room was not particularly clean, with dust in the corners and on the furniture. The bathroom needed a lot of work. The drain in the center of the floor smelled. The shower nozzle was awful. And what modern hotel does not have elongated toilet bowls?

On the positive. The staff was courteous and helpful. And the breakfast was nice. The saloon was a hoot.

Just spent our second stay at the Strater and could not be more pleased. We had an amazing room filled with antique Victorian furniture, a bed that was a gorgeous four-poster piece, and all the ambience of the still-a-bit-wild-West out the Windows with a great view of downtown Durango below.

This room was much larger and more well-appointed than in our previous stay, and it was just a wonderful place to be for a romantic weekend where we rode up on the Harley from New Mexico and spent Saturday on the Durango-Silverton Narrow Gauge Train.

Full breakfast was part of the package, and that was excellent. Breakfast was a buffet with all the fixings, plus an omelet of the day is offered each day.

The Strater has two restaurants and a bar, and there was live music in the saloon and restaurant on the weekend. The kitchens do stop at 9PM, so we needed to go elsewhere for dinner Friday and Saturday nights, but the staff were kind enough to direct us to local eateries where the kitchen stayed until 11pm or midnight.

THe bathroom was very nice, tiled and the hair dryer hidden away in a Victorian dresser. (They note this in the check-in materials.) WiFi is free and no-nonsense, no password needed. More hotels need to learn how to offer WiFi without hassles, and the Strater does it.

The Strater boasts the largest collection of VIctorian furniture in the world. Yes, the world, according to the front desk. And it is really gorgeous. The overall tone throughout is dark wood, red-toned designed wallpaper, and dark red/browns for carpetting. Very much the color scheme of the era in which the hotel was built at the inception of Durango in the late 1800s.

You can definitely get the feel of railroad barons, miners, travelers, and bohemians of all kinds staying at The Strater over its history.

My only issue was with the robes provided in the rooms and offered for sale along with other trinkets from the hotel. The robes were very soft and nice, but ridiculously small! They seemed to be child-sized in our room, or for LIlliputlians! We are fit people, not overweight, and neither one of us could fit into the robes! They don't close. Try to tie the belt and the robe is wide open over the legs! I asked for larger, adult size robes and the female staffer at the front desk seemed surprised (how can that be?) and made only a show of saying she'd "check with housekeeping," and it was clear from her lack of helpfulness that there was no intention of providing different robes. They were so nice, and they want to sell them, and yet they cannot stock a normal "one size fits all" type of robe? This was mystifying and annoying in an otherwise simply wonderful room and stay.

I would highly recommend The Strater for a historic and lovely stay in Durango and environs. Bring your own robe.

Room Tip: Upper floors for view and to abate street noise and saloon noise.

We enjoyed our stay at the Strater Hotel. The room was charming, spacious and spotlessly clean. The staff was friendly and helpful. The breakfast was quite nice and offered a decent variety. A made-to-order omelet is offered each morning. Dinner in the hotel was pricey but it seems this is the norm for downtown Durango. I would highly recommend staying at The Strater.
